View Full Version : Mandated quota for women in the parliament

For the upcoming elections in Greece we are going once again to suffer this simpleminded measure that allegedly promotes equality. It is more than evident to any healthy observer that women in developed societies choose to involve in politics much less than men and this has nothing to do with discriminations. But many keen politicians are going to be left out of lists because of this ill-minded enforcement of political correctness.

Women are human beings, much like men. They do not choose to opt out of the human race as much decline to bash their heads together to see who can survive mutual brain mashing. Women are not a holy order of messiah bearing virgins or brain dead foetus carriers. They are different, but very much the same as men. If there is a difference in the fact that there are less women in the democratic process at parliamentary level than men, then I think we can attribute this fact to other reasons than that they just aren't interested in it. Perhaps they just aren't as machismo as men, which would hardly be surprising.

How delightfully un-democratic.

I think we should have more women in the parliament, then we can blame them when something is wrong.:D

What I define as lack of democracy and racism is exactly this discrimination that the quota imposes. I don't know where we can attribute the fact (and it is a fact) that women don't seem to involve in politics. You can attribute it wherever you like. It remains a fact. As long as it is not a result of social discrimination, the quota is also a violation of the rights of women voters themselves. It suppresses their will as it is expressed through voting.
Tony, as much as I admire your terseness, your response is still completely inadequate. I present arguments, you present characterizations. In this context, I don't think you are entitled to talk "democracy" to me. Go play somewhere else.

I totally agree with El Greco on that. It's very embarassing for the Greek female citizens to participate in the Elections just because the Law says so. It's humiliating.

Positive discrimination is still discrimination in my book. I agree with your sentiments El Greco.
My interpretation of Tonys comment was that he thought that imposing a minimum quota was undemocratic, not your opposition to it El Greco.
