Are there versions of these that aren't RealMedia files? Or am I incorrect in assuming that the .rm files are video?

Yes .rm are video files.

With RealPlayer you can watch them online or download them to watch them later offline.

It's never going to happen. Ever. RealPlayer has not touched a computer of mine for ten years, and it's staying that way.

Anyone know of a way to get around the RealSpyWarePlayer issue?

VLC should work. also google "ubuntu realplayer alternative"
