As Bush was ramping up the Iraq war last winter, Canadian military officials were startled to discover Pentagon recruiters roaming through their nation's native population reserves trying to persuade Inuit and others to enlist in the U.S. military. The Americans started cropping up on the Atlantic Coast in Quebec, in the Sault Sainte Marie area of Ontario, and in Western Canada. A Canadian Defense Ministries report said the U.S. claimed that under the 1794 Jay Treaty it had the right to recruit Canadian native inhabitants for its military because aboriginal Canadians held dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship.

Why? Is there any reason Canadians shouldn't be allowed to serve in the US military if they so choose?

I expect you would have the same feelings about the French Foreign Legion.

We're fighting a war in the desert. How the f*** will Inuit recruits help? We should be recruiting Navahos and Hopis.

It's actually an outreach program to help the Inuit people deal with the melting of the polar ice caps and snow in their land and adjust early on to the effects of global warming caused only by American industries in Canada.;)

I thought the warming in Canada was due the excess carbon dioxide exhaled by a nation of mouth-breathing cretins.

Or would that be one mouth-breathing Chritien.

At least the Inuits will get to leave that floating iceberg of Nanu Nanu (or whatever they call that new province up there) and move someplace warm and filled with palm trees.

True. And since they'll want to live near the ocean so they can still hunt whale we can say we prepped them for Iraq's oil well destruction policy with the Exxon Valdez. In fact I bet that was part of this clandestine operation of ours to steal the Inuits from Canada.

I say that because the Inuit population also dwells in Alaska.

Does this mean that they've run out of good recruits in the USA?
Wow, that didn't take long.

And besides, it's not like Canada is going to be using them for anything military.

One of the funniest news clips I've ever seen involved an unarmed indian chasing an armed Canadian soldier off some disputed property. As the trooper tried to get away, the indian planted his boot right in middle of the trooper's ass. The local news was kind enough to replay the shot several times for my benefit.

Maybe the recruiters saw the same footage.

I never way that footage. But good for the soldier for not losing his temper and exercising some good self discipline.

I was watching the news a few years ago and the local ski hill had some US soldiers doing some winter training. They were all falling down on their skiis and several of the soldiers said that this was the first time they had seen snow. I think recruiting people who can survive in arctic conditions would be a huge benefit.

What was the Canadian soldier doing in India?
