Officials admitted on Friday that a third student was mistakenly given the swine flu vaccine - an error the school nurses union blamed on the city.

Imagine what will happen when Obama’s Government Health (we-don’t-care) Plan becomes law.

I'm sure if the kids starts bleeding out the ears and foaming at the mouth, his parents can sue.

This was an American student, so the parents of that kid have already phoned their lawyer. I think everyone in that country has one on their speed dial ;)

My favorite (out of context) quote from the article:
"We don't like it when we're right, because usually when we're right someone does get hurt somewhere along the way."

"School nurses mistakenly gave the swine flu vaccine to two students who didn't sign up for it - including a Brooklyn (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Brooklyn) girl with epilepsy who wound up in the hospital."

No big deal.

A process that has been repeated millions of times has had some mistakes, almost all minor. What a shock. Must be that government incompetence at work.

What is with the escalation marks on the thread? It hasn't been accurate once these last couple of weeks. Bet the government runs that too.

MIKE WALLACE: The flu season is upon us. Which type will we worry about this year, and what kind of shots will we be told to take? Remember the swine flu scare of 1976? That was the year the U.S. government told us all that swine flu could turn out to be a killer that could spread across the nation, and Washington decided that every man, woman and child in the nation should get a shot to prevent a nation-wide outbreak, a pandemic.
Well 46 million of us obediently took the shot, and now 4,000 Americans are claiming damages from Uncle Sam amounting to three and a half billion dollars because of what happened when they took that shot. By far the greatest number of the claims - two thirds of them are for neurological damage, or even death, allegedly triggered by the flu shot.

And the number of complaints this year (as reported by ABC News tonight) is just over 300, the majority of which being a sore arm or other minor complaint.

I doubt the number of negative reactions will approach 1976 levels. At least, I hope so.

Imagine what will happen when Obama’s Government Health (we-don’t-care) Plan becomes law.

I imagine that even with a new government health care plan, it's going to be the same people who run the hospitals, the same people being doctors, and the same people who give flu shots as before.

Why would that change just because there's a change in who pays for it?

mistakes can be a big deal.

Yes, an upset tummy and itching (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/education/2009/10/30/2009-10-30_sorry_bout_the_shot_public_school_nurses_give_s wine_flu_vaccine_to_kids_without_.html) is a big deal.

I'm not saying that this wasn't a mistake and a bad thing, but let's keep some perspective. The vaccine didn't provoke a seizure in the girl, at least none was reported. If anything, it sounds like an allergic reaction or, perhaps, a reaction to her other meds. A slight adverse reaction to vaccines is not uncommon.

So, to clarify my own question of "why is this a big deal", how is this any sort of commentary on universal health care?

The difference between now an 1976 is that people actually ARE dying in large numbers. The threat is real this time.

That was more addressed to the OP, which seems to say that this is an indication of what universal health care would be like. All this, despite the fact that there is no apparent link between the two.

The whole question of "why is this a big deal" challenges this notion.

I had noticed a puzzling number of threads being flagged with this ( http://forums.randi.org/images/icons/icon4.gif ) icon for reasons I was unable to discern, until I also noticed that if you click on "Thread Tools" at the top of each thread page that this is the icon associated with the "Ignore This Thread" option.
