Undesired Walrus

Someone recently uploaded the election night special from 1992 on youtube. I was struck by how energised the public were in the election, people from all walks of life. I was curious to know the reasons behind this huge turnout. Was it that there was something to vote for, and Labour and the Tories actually stood by their principles? Why that turnout then, but sadly not today (I think 05 had only a 40% turnout)?
