No, Mr. Edward John, AKA 'Mr ed john', or 'm. red john'. I think they got the name from 'The Mentalist'

Ohhh, wait, perhaps 'The Mentalist' did the reverse, and has the main character hunting a representation of John Edwards. Wow, what a discovery.

I had to put that off while settling with UPS's Rarry Moore in Benin about the $850,000,000 (yup, 850 MILLION) check.
Lethargy is preventing me from doing anything about either of these though.

Dear "Mr. Edward John",

If you are going to continue to shamelessly scam innocent people, I suggest you at least learn to do it right. Is English your first language? No, I don't think it is. I suggest you get the help of a friend who speaks English better than you do and have him or her correct your emails. It's one thing if one pretends to be a Nigerian prince hiding a fortune and deliberately misspells words and uses incorrect grammar and it's another if one pretends to be an FBI agent from the United States. I mean, really, who do you think you are kidding? I'd particularly suggest that you pay attention to punctuation and run on sentences. Let me give you a tip. Do you always use gmail? You should make use of their spell check. Hotmail also has a spell check. You also have to remember that, unlike in England, in America people always put a period after the title. Yes, "Mr Edward John". See, I knew there was something fishy about your email! :P Something told me it couldn't be legit! :P

Of course, I suggest you forget about it all together. You'd really have had a much happier life if you had chosen an honest profession. Sweeping the streets and serving fries at McDonalds' is better than this.

Sincerely,

I wonder if this is a valid email address and how one tells?

The only time I was a bit in doubt was a series of mails regarding my paypal account.
It stated correctly that I had been using it from a new foreign ip address, and then wanted me to log on to verify something.

What really settled it for me was that it provided a new address/url for the login, and the address show when hovering over the link were different than the link.

Try turning the tables on him:

Dear MR. EMAKPO SAM BANKS (FINANCIAL SECRETARY), I was happy to see I have won the lottery because I'm having severe financial problems at the moment. My bank has frozen all my assets indefinitely and for no apparent reason. You sir are a godsend. Are you a man of God? You must be because I have prayed for a long time for a miracle and here you are!

I would very much like to collect my winnings personally and meet you face to face and thank you for this salvation you have brought upon me. But like I alluded earlier I have no money at my disposal. I need you to send me money for a plane ticket so I can come and collect the money. And meet you! Rest assured I will pay you back generously with my lottery winnings. I will give you 25% of the prize money! That is more than fair, wouldn't you agree? I look forward to sharing this blessing with you as soon as you send me enough money for a plane ticket!

Yours in Glorious Name Of Our God, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit, Careyp74.

With all respect, 419eater is the new kid on the block. I cut my teeth on:

http://www.scamorama.com/

way back in 2003. It is true that you have to exercise a bit of caution, not the least of which involves setting up a convincing fake persona. Not that it's difficult, but the real tricky bit is when they want to call you, and doing an end-run around that. Because the jig is up if they actually get you on the phone. Anyway, here is my most successful anti-scam. In the end, I had them at the airport holding up a sign that said BUTTQUEST:

http://www.scamorama.com/reginald-offor.html

Make of it what you will, but that was 7 weeks worth of e-mails and a few top-notch animal stories. Of course, the idea is to waste their time, take the piss, and post your trophy story up on teh internets... oh yeah, and what's gotten especially tricky now is that they can Google for bits of your conversation, which of course completely blows your cover. That's why you have to wait till the full interchange is completed before you go public with it.

I did some baiting awhile back but had too many going at once and burned out on it. I did manage to get some bank accounts. If not shut down, at least the banks were alerted to them being used for scamming.

After stretching it as far as I could, I got a couple to go to Western Union with fake claims. I always feigned ignorance but I did get some threats. I think going to Western Union and MoneyGram with fake claim numbers really cheeses them off in particular because they've actually done more work than typing and they've shown their faces to the staff.

Those were the practical benefits, but far more interesting to me were the stories I'd come up with. The first few emails are all just cut and pasted, so it only gets to be fun when you know they're actually writing back.

One of my favorites was having my baiting alter-ego have an incontinent son that enjoyed said incontinence. This caused a lot of problems at both school and home, delaying my ability to send money. The problem at home was also difficult as the scammer was trying to buy my house... The stench wasn't a deal-breaker, fortunately.

I also ran an adult bookstore. The scammer was (pretending to be) a girl that wanted my help entering the country, so I was going to provide a work visa... Oddly, with this bait, I couldn't actually get them to agree to work at my store.. They'd marry me without question, but for some odd reason just saying they'd work at a place like that was too much. After that it was just demands for money.
