I work in the oil and gas industry.

Finding pipelines is something that needs to be done from time to time and corrosion of pipelines is serious business.

Anyway I was pursuing a corrosion website and came across this.
http://www.farwst.com/fwst/instrum/magnetomatic.htm

I can't tell if they are serious or not, but it sure makes them look bad to hide the joke that well.

I don't see any prices or way of ordering the dowsing device. They do sell all kinds of legit equipment though, it seems. I'm going to say this is a very clever in-joke among folks who should and do, know better. We shall see.

No prices, no grid markings in the background, no use of color and no pictures.

Could be someone's joke page got posted as real?

Well well well, someone has spoofed Farwest. Compare this, the real company website,

http://www.farwestcorrosion.com/products-fwst.htm

with this:

http://www.farwst.com/fwst/instrum/magnetomatic.htm

It's definitely part of the site, as it's under their miscellaneous products section on the left hand menus.

The lack of pricing may be clue.

ETA
I found the pricing for it!

04-29950 Magnetomatic Pipe Locator $38.50
04-29951 Magnetomatic Pipe Locator, case only $6.00

So they really do want to sell these! All for the low low price of $44.50!

Only if you are a sucker and buy the case. That's where they get you!

Sheesh! I stand corrected. Trying to play chess and debunk at the same time doesn't work. The description just sounded too well written  to be done by wooists. Oh well.

In talking with my boss about this, I guess there are some old time guys in the industry where this is a viable method for finding pipelines.

I guess it just takes time for these things to fade away.

From the site:
This instrument may be used in the interior of structures, as well as outside to locate pipe, conduit and cable. There are some individuals who cannot use the Magnetomatic Pipe Locator. If an operator during the test of the unit cannot get any movement from the indicator after repeated attempts, a new operator should be chosen.

The 1550 edition of Sebastian Münster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_M%C3%BCnster)'s Cosmographia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmographia) contains a woodcut of a dowser with forked rod in hand walking over a cutaway image of a mining operation.

Yeah, I should think another 500 years ought to do it. We've had our share of 21st century dowsers on JREF.
