Does anyone know if there was an earlier version of this type of organization?
In particular one that operated during the 1840-1890, ie the 'Victorian' era?
For those not familar with the term it was, AFAIU an unofficial organization set up to monitor and fight against 'modernism'. It appears to have not been supported by the Roman curia.
