Man jailed for eating rare tiger (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091222/od_nm/us_tiger)

A man who killed and ate what may have been the last wild Indochinese tiger in China was sentenced to 12 years in jail, local media reported on Tuesday.

Kang Wannian, a villager from Mengla, Yunnan Province, met the tiger in February while gathering freshwater clams in a nature reserve near China's border with Laos. He claimed to have killed it in self-defense.

Kang was also fined 480,000 yuan ($70,000).

Hell, he's lucky he didn't get executed (if he'd actually tried to sell the meat, which he apparently didn't, he probably would have been). China's getting very serious about poaching now (wish they'd get as serious about protection of territory for those same endangered animals).

However, I personally would tend to think that this was not an intentional/planned thing. If the guy had been going out to intentionally hunt/kill the tiger, he would have done so in order to sell the meat (from which he could make a fortune). It sounds rather like he killed it as a result of a chance encounter, then he and his friends ate it in order to try to cover it up (knowing that he'd get in trouble if discovered).

So it would have been OK if he'd eaten it medium or well done?
