View Full Version : Magick will bring down LiveJournal

Greetings all,

Not long ago, I founded the LiveJournal community skepticaldebate. In the community, I brought up magick and wondered if anyone was interested in performing some sort of objective test of their magickal powers. Someone felt up to the challenge, and has agreed to cause the LiveJournal site to go down for five minutes during a specified hour on Monday.
More about the test is here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/skepticaldebate/2859.html).
Feel free to keep an eye on the test, or if there are LJ'ers out there in Randi-land... by all means join the community. Please don't irritate the magickian too much until after the test is complete.
I'm making no claims that this is an airtight test of magickal power, but even a tentative test is better than nothing.

Hacking is now considered magickal?

Surprise! This is in_tu_it on LJ. Yes, I am here as well. Sorry if I am causing a mess in your community, but for some reason I just let myself go wild with debate frenzy. I'm a debate berserker, apparently.

No, you're not making a mess. I just hope our one 17-year old magickian doesn't get scared off. I'm disappointed at how few paranormal types are willing to debate the issue. I posted an invitation to 4 or 5 magick-related groups, each with hundreds of members, and none of these puissant magickians wants to show off. My messages weren't deleted as off-topic -- they just languished with no comments. How come? Do they realize that they're all full of baloney, or do they not want to share their esoteric knowledge with mere mortals like us?

They know their feeble minds will be crushed by skeptics!

You're getting closer that question actually made some sort of sense.

I know, but I still feel bad for making the LJ community seem like a trap, instead of a nice place to debate.

Of course, the more confident half in me says those types of people will ALWAYS say "it's a trap" when their opponents are hardliners. Which brings me to the thought: is there any other type of debate besides skeptical?

PS Thanks to the JREFer who started that Wittgenstein post, cause if I hadn't taken part in that debate I would've been unaware of this guy's word tricks.

Sure, I'll share my esoteric knowledge with you. Listen very closely...I must whisper this...these secrets are not meant for the uneducated, the unordained, or the unprepared...

...neither the word 'magic' or 'magician' has the letter 'k' in it...

Hah, don't I know it. Of course, he (and others) do that to differentiate his magick from, say, stage magic. It's just as pretentious as the name "Bright", and it elicits that same reaction in me.

Although I have noticed that the people who spell "magick" also tend to spell "womyn"....

There's a few Wiccans on the 'convert_me' LJ that have some pretty strong beliefs in magick. I stopped replying to them when it became obvious that they weren't willing to listen to rationality. If you want to invite them over, though, might be fun.

I blame Aleister Crowley.

But then he also said, "It is a remarkable fact that only very exceptional men retain their normal reasoning powers in the presence of mountains" so he can't be all bad.
