Some of you might have picked up that Im in the Territorial Army, the British equivalent of the US's National Guard.

Anyway, its been over six months since I last picked up a rifle and froze my arse off in a Sussex puddle. In fact Im thinking of putting in for a discharge. The reasons for this are many but foremost is the disgust I feel at the penny pinching attitude of the Ministry of Defence.

I have been pretty torn-up about this, not quite knowing what to do as I do (did) really enjoy being a soldier. Anyway, I was astonished to find that Colonel Tim Collins ("If you are ferocious in battle remember to be magnanimous in victory"), feels the same and has tendered his resignation:

Some quotes:

Colonel Tim Collins believes the Army is in danger of being "a glorified Home Guard" because of underfunding and bureaucracy he told the Mail on Sunday.

Mrs Collins also said her husband was concerned by political correctness in the Army and "the refusal of politicians who send British soldiers to war to give them enough money to do their job".

I wonder if any other prominent or high-ranking officers will come forward with the same view?

They take cash into battle?

One thing that I always remember from my time in the army ( a long time ago when hippies roamed the earth) was that we always had this idea that the wornout crappy equipment we had was only for training and that if we ever ended up going into battle we would get sparkling new stuff....guess what.

Damn, for the life of me I can`t put my finger on that Shakespeare quote...HenryIV I think, you know the one about cannon fodder.

You're not alone. Apparently the USA just sent a RCT into Iraq. The good news is that they all have the good body armor and the inserts, the bad news is that the other 3 RCT's had to give theirs up to out fit the 1st - and they're slated to move in soon also.

Logical fallacy: false dichotomy.

I suppose you could make that into the punchline of a joke about why gays should be allowed in the military.
