In one of my PCs:
31477 files, 433MB
I guess it's been quite some time since I did maintenance work :D

I try to keep mine small. Large enough that I can retrieve embedded media files from it, but no larger.
I assume it's set up by default to be a percentage of the hard drive size. When I set up some of the newer machines at work, I find them with a cache of 2 gig or more.
If you're using a modem, it's very useful, to a point. Otherwise, hardly. It suffers diminishing returns anyway, especially if your connection is fast and your machine is slow.
Cheers,
Rat.

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Internet Options->Temporary Internet Files (on General tab)->Amount of Disk Space to Use
I keep it set around 25 MB. With boradband I don't really need a cache.

Almost nothing. I ditch it daily.
