According to Russian biology professor Andrew Poyarkov, dogs in Moscow have learned to use the city's underground rail system. he told the press that he has seen them travel into the center of the city, where they can more easily find food, each morning and travel back to where they live each evening.

Doesn't everyone just love public transportation? :p

I have seen a dog on the London underground before now. He appeared to be on his own and seemed to know where he was going. He might have been lost, but did not seem distressed at all.
I do know beyond doubt of a dog who used buses. He always got off at the right stop- though it's possible he may have ridden other buses and nobody knew about it. He had been taken on the bus many times by his owner and on one occasion ran away while in a park. When the owner took the bus home, the conductor (this is 25 years ago) told him the dog had taken the previous bus home- and he was waiting at the gate when the owner got home.
I think it's just that the animal memorises an often repeated journey. I doubt they could go anywhere else.
Of course these days, any dog trying it in London would probably be shot. Especially if he was foreign looking.

I frequently see service dogs on my bus route to work, who have a total grasp of using public transport.
BTW, RussDill, I live in Tempe.

There was also Casper the cat in Plymouth: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/8174850.stm
Sadly, his grasp of using public transport wasn't matched by his road sense: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/8467255.stm

They're compulsory. All the escalators have notices saying "Dogs must be carried".
