View Full Version : TWA Flight 800 Disaster & conspiracy theories

Does anyone here know much about the various conspiracy theories surrounding the 1996 TWA flight 800 disaster off Long Island, New York? It's easy to find conspiracy theories about it on the Internet, but it's harder to find skeptics with aviation/missile-fire knowledge to debunk them.

One good counter-conspiracy argument is that, if it was "friendly fire," then the government (or whomever) would have to keep hundreds or even thousands of people quiet on the matter. A pro-conspiracy site I looked at today said that it would't be difficult--after all, they did it with the Manhattan Project.

But of course, the Manhattan Project was an effort launched to defeat a national enemy in a time of international crisis, conducted at a time when mass communication wasn't quite as efficient or prevalent as it is today. With Flight 800, not only would you have to keep the close witnesses silent for going on a decade now, but you'd have to keep them silent about something that was mass murder or, at the very least, mass manslaughter. Seems pretty unlikely to me.

So I guess my real question is, are there any really reasonable, credible investigators who have actually turned up any good evidence, or is it all just conspiracy nuts with just another conspiracy? Thoughts?

My skeptical opinion would be: if anyone really had the goods on this, they would now be very very rich and it would no longer be a mystery... ( the goods being a missile )

The people involved with the Manhattan Project were isolated in the remote desert for a limited period of time, and after the event they "conspired" about made itself known in ways that were observable to outsiders, they didn't try to keep it a secret anymore, as far as I know.

And Stalin knew about the Trinity test almost as soon as Truman did.

Despite being extremely improbable, the events of flight 800 have been said to be consistent with being hit by a meteorite.

Thanks. That's an interesting site, though the guy who wrote it needs an editor. I think he may have decided that since it could have been a meteor, it must have been a meteor. Interesting reading, though.
