On GH this link was to an interview with someone who appears to believe in time travel. Sounds like a complete spoof to me and I commented accordingly.

Hope I've copied the link correctly.) David Lewis Anderson PhD is apparently a well-known physicist, but it would take me so long to plod through all the other links the poster gives about him, that I'm hoping someone here can give me a line or two on him. Thanks in advance.

Its not time travel, its time control, basically Anderson claims to be able to create a field in which the speed that time passes can be controlled, so that for instance the speed at the centre of the field is six times slower than what we are used to experiencing.

suddenly doesnt sound like so much sci fi does it, especially as Anderson checks out as a serious and legitimate scientist

Many thanks for the info. I shall have to think about that - I can't imagine how time could actually be slower, even though we can imagine it to be. Can you think of an analogy which might help?

well the obvious one that springs readily to mind is a black hole, from an observer point of view if you were to watch an object fall into a black hole it would appear to get slower and slower towards the centre while to the object itself time passes normally, Einsteins general relativity describes how this happens.

So Andersons claims seem to be that he can create a field that mimics a massive gravitational field without the need for a singularity

nifty if it works, the potential applications are enormous,
It would literally change everything, imagine for instance a field generator at your house and office, while you were there you wouldn't age at all, the energy required to run it would also be negligable if the generator was also inside the field. As it would potentially eliminate the effects of gravity too it could also be able to power spacecraft, which wouldn't require any fuel.

I like the idea, it seems absurdly simple. All the best ideas are. There has to be a downside though, lets hope it isn't the accidental creation of a black hole on this planets surface
:p

I had several teachers in college who could make fifty minutes last six hours....

Okay, I can cope with that one - I'm working through 'The Elegant Universe'!

Does he have supporters, or is he way out on a limb here? If he has a solidy serious reputation to maintain, he could find himself in a lot of difficulty. Perhaps he has the confidence and single-mindedness to not worry?

I'd better go back and watch those you tubes again!

Turning off computer now - back tomorrow.

he has better than supporters, he has his own institute

Delayed response I'm afraid - had complications renewing anti-virus today which the Tech Support guy had to take control of my computer to sort out.
Then I lost stuff from Inbox .. but that was my fault!

Anyway, thank you for link, I will look at it tomorrow.

Had an idea for a practical application
what if you could set up a field in your house where time ran backwards at three times the normal speed
so you'd go out everyday, come home, go to bed, get 8 hours sleep and wake up the same age as you had the previous morning
you would effectively be immortal (barring accidents)
I want one
:D

It would literally change everything, imagine for instance a field generator at your house and office, while you were there you wouldn't age at all,

You also wouldn't experience time "at all". If you spent an hour in your house in a 1/6 strength field, 6 hours just passed in the rest of the world.
It seems like the best applications would be preservation-based: keeping perishables fresh, keeping patients alive while we figure out a cure, etc.

I don't believe a word of this, definitely bs.

do you have a background in particle physics ?
