i was playing "call of duty", great game, i'm killing nazi bastards left and right, then after the 5th level the speed the game moves at grinds to a halt, everything was fine before that now it moves at about 3 frames per second. i tried replaying the lower levels again and theyre fine. so i'm guessing it's a problem with the game and not a conflict with my computer because if it was a problem with the graphics card, etc. why wouldnt there be problems with the first few levels?
any educated guesses out there???

H,
When you come back in after a quit and continue/resume on the "slower" levels are they still slow?
Or does it only go slow when you play through the early levels too.
I'm assuming you exceed the minimum specs for the game.
I play and I've not had this happen to me.

it doesnt matter when, whether i start the game fresh on a given level or jump around from level to level, the lower levels always work fine and the higher levels are all screwy.
yep, i exceed the specs as well.
doh.

I'd be willing to bet it's their new implementation of safedisc which can also gradually degrade performance.
Are you running any RamDisc utilities? If so Safedisc being the crappiest product ever made, and a blatant insult to legitimate purchasers of software entertainment products, automatically assumes you are using your ramdisc to pirate the game and will not allow the game to run properly if any RamDisc utility is running.
You have to either disable your ram disc in order to play the game. Or oyu have to go to astalavista and get a cracked .EXE to play the game.
I'm assuming you're not actually pirating the game. If you are, it's your problem.

nope, it's a legit copy. i could only return it for the same title so i'm hoping your suggestion works. when i get home i''ll check for RAmDisc utitities, though i don't recall ever downloading anything with that name. thanks for the advice

It's not a specific program, it's any of a class of utilities that partitions your RAM off to make a virtual disc drive. People use it to copy disc programs into memory to make them run faster or so that they don't have to have the disc in the drive in order to run the program. By copying an entire disc into a RAM drive partition, you have access to a program as if it were run off a disc but with all the speed of having it memory resident.

What video card do you have?
I had to update my video card drivers (ATI) to get rid of one error, so check with your card manufacturer. Also maybe install the latest directx if not already installed.

Might be useful to ask these guys (http://www.codboards.com/index.php?showforum=19)
COD absolutely rocks. Dont return it, it's worth playing it for storming the Chancellery at the end alone!!

COD is so great, Harry. Good luck with fixing your problem, so you can finish it.
I have noticed that when playing TW2004, after a while, it starts to slow down when loading new screens. I minimize it and go out to my analogx memory manager (free download, very cool) and recover memory. This seems to help. Windows ME leaves a lot of memory hanging and analogx recovers it. At least, this is how I understand it to work; I am certainly no computer wiz.

Sounds like it could be a bad memory leak. Just by more RAM for a short term fix, you can never have too much RAM. Whatever is causing the leak should be patched eventually.

Stupid question: does the game slow down when you're character becomes hit by incoming artillery?

no from the moment the level starts.
btw, i gave up trying to make it work and played and finished the game at my friend's house (using his copy of hte game). i spent a good three hours working on fixing the problem on my PC to no avail. fortunately of the one or two games i buy a year this is the first time something like this has happened.
still pretty pissed that i couldn't find the conflict in my system.
but thanks for all the help anyway!

How full is the drive that the game resides on?
Is there a lot ( more ) of drive activity when you are playing the slow levels.. You may need to clean up your drive and defrag...

The multiplayer is great. I play it virtually everyday.
Here are a couple other boards where you might be able to find help.

I remember a game a wee while ago called warrior kings
Worked fine on the lower levels but I was getting about 1FPS in the later levels which was a shame. Now going to the website and entering the forum I found out the game seemed to be incompatible with NVidia geforce cards. As all my video cards are Nvidia. I was most annoyed so I took the game back and demanded a full refund.
