THE government of Margaret Thatcher was not known for its friendliness to gay rights or leftwingers.

However, the writer Christopher Hitchens has revealed that when he was a radical student at Oxford in the late 1960s he had sexual entanglements with two men who would later serve as Thatcher’s ministers.

Any guesses?

'Sexual entanglements'? I can forgive youthful dalliances, but I do rather frown on clumsiness.

Politicians possibly in compromising positions? GASP! I don't believe it, I just don't believe it!

Hey maybe for those ministers they just listened to their mothers.

You know "How do you know you will not like this if you haven't tried it?" So they had some homosexuals relations to find out if it was ok or not and decided it was wrong?

Is "public school" still the opposite of what it means in America over there?

Yep - a public school is what you'd call a private school.

Oh, I remember that! So salacious even Private Eye wouldn't print it. Someone sent me a photocopy of the article....

Yeah. I just read Stephen Fry's excellent autobiography Moab Is My Washpot (http://www.amazon.com/Moab-My-Washpot-Stephen-Fry/dp/1569472025), in which he describes his years at a boys' public school. Apparently those kids are all over each other 24/7. The younger boys are passed around like cigarettes by the older boys.

(It was a bit like that when I was a kid at Boy Scout camp here in the US.)

Okay, you've got sex there.

What about the adventures?

Apparently, the acts in question occurred on the back of a motorcycle while speeding along an Andean dirt road in search of a Crystal Skull.

There's a precedent for guys who like to have sex with men to make it clear that they're not gay.

I'd guess he's bisexual if anything.

Is it wrong if they do not want to form long term relationships with men but only women and just seek short term sexual relations with men?

I'd guess he's bisexual if anything.

It is also that labels fail to match exactly what an individual will or will not do or find interesting. I can see situations were someone would identify as straight while having regular same sex relations, and not just be a closeted homosexual.

Bertrand Russell wrote in one of his books (probably Why I am Not a Christian) about the hypocrisy of the Lords in the House of L speaking against the evils of homosexuality for this very reason. :duck:
