I just use whatever is in the redhat-artwork package. Used to be in the e14/e15 days I would use the propaganda wallpapers.

This guy does pictures of cosmic scenarios, like planets colliding or stars being formed.

http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/ of course and http://www.mikebonnell.com.
I also use UltraFractal 3 http://www.ultrafractal.com to generate desktop wallpaper. There are literally 100s of new images posted each month on the UF mailing list.

Some very talented digital art, not necessarily suitable for wallpapers though.

Some sites of individual artists.
The first, Vlad, contributes his work to Deviant Art but has a wider range of resolutions at his own site:
Softshape Art
http://art.softshape.com/
This second site will be moving to a new home but news of the move will be given soon on:
dolceVitas
http://home.hetnet.nl/~dolcevita-2/wallpapers/wallpapers-intro-engels.html
The third site requires a subscription (once only, very little) for most wallpapers:
Plasma Design

Since I skin my PC with Object Desktop (http://www.stardock.com/products/odnt/) my usual sources can be found on Wincustomize (http://www.wincustomize.com)

Greg Martin's stuff is awesome. Deviant Art is so huge, you could spend all day just looking over the submissions for just today and not get through them all.
Webshots (http://www.webshots.com) is another place I get my wallpapers. A site I pay for, for the privilege of grabbing large quanities of pictures at a time. I have somewhere around 600mb from that site alone so far.

A cheerful black.
I put a C:> icon at the top, just for old times' sake.

I guess mine is boring. It's just a pic of Buckingham fountain I took a few years ago. (http://home.mindspring.com/~turniton/Fountain.jpg) I like it though, it's my home city after all. I may change it to one of the Mars pics though!
Edited to say that yes, it's the same fountain shown in the opening credits of Married, With Children. Or the "Al Bundy fountain" as the German tourists call it. ;)

I have a painting by my mom (http://www.oregonstate.edu/~torresad/lys.html). Not that one, though. A far simpler one, of a small wooden pier and a lake. Totally minimalistic yet strangely moving. I love her work.

Here's one I use of the Statue of Liberty (http://www.xpphotoalbum.com/data/500/3725DSC00020-med.JPG?3845) at work. 'She's tough, she's a harbor chick!'
And sometimes this, (http://www.xpphotoalbum.com/showphoto.php?photo=58456&size=big&password=&sort=1&cat=500) usually around payday.

I'm using whatever jpl image pleases me most, from the rovers. Not exactly wallpaper sized, but they still look great.
I have excellent images from another planet for my desktop. Hooray for robotics!

can anyone say if by storing more and more pictures in the 'my pictures' if this affects the boot up time or closing down time.
I have quite a large selection to use for desktop background also for screen savers and I wondered if I deleted a lot of them would that speed up my pc any

No, it doesn't.
It MAY affect the running of your computer programs IF you're low on disk space and the volume the pictures are on is the same one as your paging file is on. Other than that, it shouldn't have any affect on anything.
