On January 5, 2004, California Assembly member Leland Yee, representative of San Francisco,
introduced Resolution No.144 to the California State Legislature. The title of the resolution is:
"Relative to Feng Shui".

The lack of media coverage of this event does not surprise me, so I felt it necessary to bring it to the JREF forum for commentary.

The entire Resolution is posted, as it is very short, and shall I say, to the point. My comments appear in bold.

the following text is from:

Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 144—Relative to Feng Shui.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST
ACR 144, as introduced, Yee. Feng Shui.

This measure would urge the California Building Standards
Commission to adopt building standards that promote Feng Shui
principles and publish these standards in the California Building
Standards Code.

Publish into the building code! This must be a joke. The state and the country are running massive deficits, cutting services and programs, and this Yee character wants to incorporate Feng Shui into law. I can see it now. Architect finishes blueprints. Workers ready to build. Ah... we must first check with the City Feng Shui civil servant!
"Na Na Na... Bathroom door no good here. Must face other direction. These stairs 1/8 inch too high. Bad karma if not change. And that Transamerica thingy, that point at top has to go or earthquake might someday bring destruction to city!"

Now imagine this scenario for every public building, shack, or tent the government ever builds. Wouldn't cost a dime to administer it either.

Fiscal committee: yes.

WHEREAS, Feng Shui is a natural earth science that reveals
how people are affected by their immediate surroundings, and its
core philosophy states humankind must live in harmony with the
environment; and

Natural Earth Science. 10 years from now it will simply be known as NES, and will most likely include those other recognized sciences like dowsing and remote viewing.

WHEREAS, The practice of Feng Shui originated 4,000 years
ago in ancient China when palaces and senior official residences
were built according to Feng Shui principles that ensured that the
royal families and senior court officials enjoyed harmony and high
vitality living in a positive energy environment; and

WHEREAS, Feng Shui means wind (Feng) and water (Shui),
and Chinese practitioners have focused their studies on obtaining the most benefit from the understanding of the flow of energies in the earth known as chi; and

Yes, the Chinese have benefited greatly---Communism and oppression for all.

WHEREAS, Feng Shui advocates living in harmony with the
Earth’s environment and its energy lines, so that there is a proper
balance between the forces of nature; and

WHEREAS, Feng Shui is widely practiced in China, Taiwan,
Singapore, and Malaysia, and it is regarded as a vital part of
everyday life in many parts of Asia; and

Prostitution by 12 year old girls is widely practiced too.

WHEREAS, Several western companies practice Feng Shui,
including Citibank, N.M. Rothschild, Shell, and Sime Darby, and
the principles of Feng Shui have become increasingly popular in
western culture with fashion designers such as Donna Karan and Tommy Hilfiger integrating it in their showrooms, and
entrepreneur Donald Trump consulting Feng Shui experts at his properties; and

If Hilf and Trump say so, it must be so! I know Trump's secret! I know Trump's secret!

WHEREAS, The structure of a building can affect a person’s
mood, which can influence a person’s behavior, which, in turn, can
determine the success of a person’s personal and professional
relationships, and the aim of Feng Shui architecture is to study how the environment in which people live may affect their lives, and influence their quality of life; now, therefore, be it

Now I know why, when I was dragged to church every Sunday:
I was always so tired and grumpy;
I later was diagnosed as A.D.D.;
I now pay way too much in alimony;
I can't seem to hold a job for more than a week.

Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature of the State of California
urges the California Building Standards Commission to adopt
building standards that promote Feng Shui principles and publish
these building standards in the California Building Standards
Code; and be it further

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.

Too make matters more bizarre, Representative Leland Yee was schooled and practiced as a doctor in Child Psychology and in the Mental health field. He then was on the Board of Supervisors in S.F., then sat for 8 years on the S.F. School Board of Education.

This man, and any constituents who vote for this resolution should be run out of town on a rail, and the only ones who probably care are those of you reading this post. Simply unbelievable.

Its real title should be "The Feng Shui Scam Artists Welfare Act"

I don't know what you lot are laughing about. I found that when I repositioned my musical toilet roll holder according to Feng Shui principles I experienced a renewal of creative energy.

O.K. screwing it to the ceiling means it not very easy to get at, especially with ones trousers down, but one must accept the inscrutable wisdom of mother earth. No?

Does the toilet paper come over the top of the roll or under it?
Are you using single or double ply?
Scented or unscented?
Colored or white?
If your master did not specify the above, someone must inform Assembly member Yee to include provisions to ensure all Government Feng Shui Master Architect/Decorator/Contractors receive the proper training, licensing, certification, and lifetime tenure prior to realigning America's building chi.

What a joke!
That the Legislature of the State of California
urges the California Building Standards Commission to adopt
building standards that promote Feng Shui principles and publish
these building standards in the California Building Standards
Code;
Standards?! As anyone who ever saw that Penn & Teller BS episode dealing w/ Feng Shui, there are no standards! One Feng Shui "expert" would come in and completely rearrange what the one before them did.

If passed, this will be a nightmare for architects and builders. And it being California, it just might.

From the above:

The first day of the course covered the fundamental concepts of feng shui, building blocks upon
which all feng shui theories and formulas are built upon. She put into perspective the depth of
feng shui and its use throughout the past 1000 years, then brought feng shui into the modern
context and how to use it in today’s fast-moving and greatly different world.

I spent a whole SEMESTER on Economics 101, but you can cover the "the fundamental concepts of feng shui, building blocks upon
which all feng shui theories and formulas are built upon" in PART of the FIRST DAY?????????? Boy, am I in the wrong business.............!

Not so long ago, I wrote a 16-page brochure for a Feng Shui condominium building going up in Sarasota, Florida. I've never had to swallow my pride and intelligence for the sake of work before, it was such a scam. Made me ashamed to be in advertising, really. Even the designers of the building didn't buy into Feng Shui as a real science, merely as a gimmick to attract gullible, wealthy old folks (of which Florida suffers an abundance, just ask Al Gore).

Features included a copper-plated dome in the center of a rooftop garden, which was supposed to engender this or that principle of wealth and happiness. I was compelled to mention that it seemed unwise to have a copper-plated structure on top of the tallest building for a mile in any direction in Florida, the lighning capital of the universe. Doubly so when they were encouraging old people to go up there and meditate by it.

"Crossing Over, with Feng Shui"

I guess the average time spent in "God's waiting room" just dropped a bit. :D

I wonder how much money the California government would save just by not having to deal with this kind of useless garbage.

Why not start a petition to have the legislation revoked? There MUST be anough skeptics and others in California to outnumber these nerds? And surely Arnie would not stand for it if it meant the cost of building stuff would increase because they needed to bring in woo-woos just to rearrange the furniture every time?

How little you know about California, the woo woo Mecca of the world .... :D Yep, been there more than once! Land of fruits and nuts...

But I still suspect that if you petitioned, say, just the towns of Fresno and Bakersfield that you would still get enough petitioners to outnumber these woo-woos a few times!

Hey! You two know what you are talking about. I have lived in the San Francisco bay area for the last 40 years, and the beliefs and politic of most bay area folks still amazes me. But now I know why. I was born in Bakersfield, and unfortunately was relocated at the age of 2, but obviously the towns influence on me was more than would be expected.

Drat! Can't find any references to this, but I remember a hotel that collapsed several years ago in Pyongyang, North Korea. the reason it collapsed was given as it was built to feng shui specs. more than to building code specs.
