We had one of his disciples here a couple of years ago... whacky as a truther, only without most of the hatred and paranoia.

Good grief. I had vaguely heard of it before, but actually reading the list of claims on that page... let's just say I gave up when my brain started trying to crawl out through an ear ;)

As Michael Bentine's loopy professor used to say , "There's just one, slight snag."

Dendrochronology is one of the things Fomenko actually rejects, apparently.

Heribert Illig seems to be the German flavour of "chronology criticism". Less whacky than Fomenko, but certainly inspired by him and with a lot more CT against poor Otto III.

In the same vein, there's also Albert Delahaye (http://www.albertdelahaye.nl/index.php?english), a (deceased) Dutch archivist. He claimed that the whole late Roman and early Medieval history of the northern Netherlands and Germany has been invented and has been transposed from further South. The Roman city Noviomagus, according to him, is not Nijmegen but is Noyon in Northern France, and so on.

Yeah, it's part of the cover up.
And note that in Formenko's world, the main source of almost all Civilization happens to be Russia.
It's the old joke about the Russians claiming that everything was invented in Russia coming true.
Yes, there are other Phantom History crackpots around, but they are pikers compared to Formenko.
But you do gotta wonder what Otto the 3rd did to Illig to piss him off so.....
