Cleopatra: I know, I know, I look so very young. And while I AM young, I'm still older than I look. I swear, I'm really 22, not 16.

Thanks to Shanek for hosting these pictures for me. I have many more that I'll try and get linked to later.

Dear lord, don't Kitty and I look like we're related?!

And yes, I had my hair done Thursday afternoon, so there's some photos floating around of me with my "before" hair. And not to be too terribly vain, but, I just have to say, my face is still a little swollen from my jaw surgery. Not so that anyone would notice, but enough that it will look different when all the swelling is gone.

Here's another, of Randi and me:

Moe, I thought that you were in my age. Now I must chase you around the forum and spank you every time you don't behave yourself. You are 12 years younger you must listen to what I say.I behave like a mother to Renata who is older than you are, think what you will suffer from me...

For starter, you should have been in bed now.

We will talk about the things I heard you did in TAM in private...

Besides being so young the impression I got of Moe was of a tightly wound rubber band. Thin and full of energy waiting to be released. Just wish I could have spent more time with ya.

Will try to get my pics up today. Managed to fill two memory cards on my camera.

great pictures but I thought the tam was in miami......and that miami is always hot. So why has everyone got on sweaters?

SkepticScott
21st January 2004, 07:21 AM
This year TAM was in Las Vegas. Daytime temperatures got up to about 65°F (18°C) while nighttime temperatures dropped to about 50°F (10°C).

People that came from cold areas (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, South Dakota, etc.) wore t-shirts. Las Vegas natives wore sweaters.

I will say that I may be issuing a call for photographs of the "Relic in performance." I have two such photos already... one shows Teller's face obscured and the other is a little blurry. Some folks have already graciously offered to send me their photos, and I greatly appreciate the offer.

I expect to frame the Relic and include a photo of the Relic during the performance... if I can find a decent photo, that is.

I had planned upon making a bid on the bullet as well. (The bullet was used in Penn & Teller's bullet-catching act at the Rio--the bullet consisted of the cartridge from Penn's gun and the slug Penn "caught" in his mouth.) As a soon-to-be forum member will attest, I won a rather substantial sum at the MGM Grand ten-dollar blackjack tables the night before the auction of the bullet, and I had decided to use this sum to make a bid... but unfortunately the very first bid was greater than the amount of my winnings, so I decided to pass on the bullet.

My photos come back on CDs on Saturday. I do not have any way of posting them, but if I have some good photos, I may be asking for some help in getting them to a web site.

The key caveat is "if I have some good photos." It is well within the bounds of possibility that every single photo will be blurred, poorly lit or blocked by my middle finger. I have not used a camera for several years, and I generally restrict myself to the point-and-shoot-you-idiot variety of camera.

Upon taking photos, my attitude was to remember what I saw, as there is a very good likelihood that my photos would not turn out. Thus, if things turn out well, I will have cause to be happy.

Shanek -- great photos of Jerry Andrus' nuts! I've never seen someone capture on film the true essence, form and beauty of his nuts, but you have done so. I was there watching when you delicately worked your hand around them, but had no idea it'd look so good on film.

What an increadible event last weekend! It is so nice to be able to bask in the afterglow of the conference here on the forum.

I sure enjoyed meeting so many of the forum regulars, and I hope to up my post rate in the coming months.

I should have been more methodical in my picture taking, but here are a few random shots, including a few decent pics of the red rock field trip.

I have higher res version's, pm me if you would like one.

I didn't remember everyone's forum name, so if you know someone without a name, or named as "?", please PM me with the information. I've broken the pictures into several pages so you won't get swamped with the full 8MB at once. The biggest page is the one about the Slammer Tour. :) Enjoy!

The S&M's come from Saudi Arabia.

In connection with getting a real human skeleton from a medical supplier, Penn was asked by the supplier whether he had a skeleton already. "Is this a trick question?" he replied.

Umm....ok, so I did not have a camera, let alone a digital camera, at The Meeting. But it seems that every time I turned around, somebody was taking a picture. Now, I don't particularly like pics of myself, and I wouldn't want to subject others to them, but at my advanced age my memory can only do so much, and I would greatly appreciate it if anyone who has pics with me in them (actually, only if there are other people as well--I don't need any pics of just me) would somehow get copies to me. PM for my e-mail address, or PM a link, or whatever works for you. I'll owe you one...and as Phil knows...well, never mind what Phil knows.

And just by the way, thanks to all who have posted pictures--I trusted that this would happen (my camera was in use that weekend at my daughter's play) and I am very happy with the pics that have been thus far posted. Once again, this community has come through...

Silly ignorant Cleo. The entire U.S. is not defined by Birmingham or Tupelo.

If you were shocked by the nude statues, you'd have crapped yourself with all the porn/hooker/strip club flyers that were availible/handed out all over the Strip.

I dropped my film photos off at Eckards yesterday, but I did want to point out that in this photo of Shane's (http://shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/arcticpenguin/p1010001.jpg) I was setting a fashion trend that would be adopted by well attired gentlemen attendees the rest of the conference.

Would Greek columns from the 13th century suffice? They're claimed to be original, but they wouldn't need to be a original to still be considered part of the local architecture.Take a look (http://www.cadeiconti.com/) But Venice is such a mish-mesh of architectural influence that, almost by definition, there should have been Greek columns. I'd be very surprised if there weren't. Actually, I don't feel like going through Venice pictures right now but I'm sure I could dig some more. So, if you are to mock the Venetian, find some other argument. :p

I will say this: During the P&T show, I enjoyed Penn Jillette's juggling from a perspective that is different from everyone else. First, I noticed that Penn dropped a torch inadvertently while doing "chops." This was actually an ego boost for me, as I thought "Hey, if PENN JILLETTE can drop during his LAS VEGAS show, then there is nothing for me to be ashamed about!"

The broken bottles trick was interesting, too, because much of what Penn said was NOT B.S. This stunt really does entail a danger of being lacerated. When juggling an unfamiliar object, a juggler really does need to take a few practice thows to get a "feel" of the object. Objects that have their mass unevenly distributed (like some broken bottles) really do move in unusual ways when thrown. Stopping juggling of some objects really is harder than starting. (Some jugglers find that it is a simple matter to juggle eggs without breaking them, but that the risk of breakage is very high when stopping.)

I'd give good odds that he drops one every night by "accident" to up the anxiety level when he juggles the broken glass. Also gives him a chance to use the fire extinguisher to the same effect. Anyone see the show on any other night?

Luciana

I was under that impression too, cosmic. He dropped the torch purposefully because he had to have a chance to use the fire extinguisher, a very important act of the show.

Also, notice how magicians do that all the time. They might say "let me see if I get it this time" because that builds much more tension than when the audience just expectst things to go right. I think the audience likes to see someone completely baffled. :)Ian Rowland resorted to that too when cutting out that PPO. He said something like "oh, let me see if I don't screw up"... Jamie Ian Swiss used that line too, always emphasizing that he "might" get things right. But it's as Randi says... what are the chances of getting it right? 100%. Because it's a trick! :)

No, it would not suffice. When we speak of "Greek" columns, we speak from the Archaic period. At least, I do! :)

You are correct that some of the torch drops were indeed intentional. They gave Penn an opportunity to show that (1) a juggler can catch the torch by the flaming end and not get hurt and (2) you can yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.

But these are not the drops I was talking about. The drop I was referring to occurred during a move that jugglers call "chops," which is a flashy move that requires a very solid grip on the clubs/torches. When Penn dropped, he apparently did so because he did not have a solid grip. He picked up the flaming torch with no comment other than a mild expletive, and continued the act.

Yes, I know the one you're talking about, and he's done that one ever single time I see the act. I think he's just putting it into your head that he CAN drop it and CAN make a mistake, and he's just doing so in a realistic manner.

To add further ammo to what you say, I saw them in Reno about four or five years ago, they did the same juggling routine complete with dropped torch and the "unusual" third bottle.

SkepticScott

I've seen the "unusual" third bottle done in each of four or so times I saw them here in New England. What's funny is that it's a two-level gag. He's saying that he's supposed to say it's a bottle-from-hell and pretend, but he says that it really is a bottle-from-hell and he's not pretending. He says his lie has turned into the truth. But that's part of the act too.

There was one time that Penn went to smash a bottle and instead of just the bottom breaking, the whole bottle shattered. He dropped the little bit of neck he was holding and broke another bottle. That bottle disintegrated too! I forget what he said at that point, but he very carefully broke the next bottles and managed to get three to juggle.

I'm aware that Penn wants to build up the danger of the bottle juggling, and it doesn't surprise me that he makes a big deal about the third bottle. My guess is that the bottles that we saw are not much different than the bottles Penn uses on other nights.

My point is that Penn is NOT kidding when he suggests that this stunt is dangerous. It is. He could get suffer some nasty cuts. Kids should not try this stunt at home. (They should wait until they are at school before trying it. That's a joke, stolen from Amazing Johnathan, I believe.) Also, Penn is not kidding when he says that the bottles may follow some rather unusual paths. (Penn did not say so, but I will: two bottles hitting each other in mid-air can have EXTREMELY nasty consequences.)

Penn's remark about non-linear equations was funny to me because most phenomena are described by non-linear equations (linear equations being the exception rather than the rule), so there was nothing really special about the bottles from a mathematical point of view.

As for the dropped torch (not to be confused with the intentionally dropped "Fire! Fire!" bit), perhaps he does drop intentionally. I will say, then, that he didn't use this much to his advantage. When he did the clearly intentional three-torch drop, he screamed "Fire!" and when he "accidentally" intentionally dropped the knife, he screamed "Dammit to Hell!" But when the torch fell during "chops," nothing really noteworthy was said, and Penn did not use it to his advantage. (For example, one juggler used to say "I did that intentionally to prove how difficult this really is" and another would say "Oops, I'd better go to my back-up plan: Everybody, you better BACK UP!")

Okay, I hate to reveal my friends mistake, but here goes.
I've seen the show about 200 times. Hell, maybe more. I lost count long ago. Anyhow, that bit was recently put back into the show, about 3 months ago.
The drop Brown is refering to was a real drop. That was an embarassing mistake.
The faked drop happens when he says, "I'm going to have the WORST POSSIBLE ACCIDENT while juggling torches. I'm going to catch the torch - on the wrong end. Watch for it, it's going to happen right...NOW." The he drops it, throws the other two down, grabs the extinguisher, and yells "FIRE, FIRE" until he puts out the torches.

Another interesting thing to notice was how far the torches rolled on the stage that night. One came very close to the edge of the stage, and people with sharp eyes probably noticed Robbie, head stage hand, run out "just in case".

As for the bottles, yes, that's "dangerous". Penn is a great juggler, he's a juggler first and then a magician, it's what he's best at. He can do that trick and it's "easy" for him. But, he gets hurt every night. Little shards of glass get into his hands, and I'd often see him after with cuts. But, it's a beautiful piece. I love the patter and I think it's a lovely trick.

Now, don't tell anyone I told about his mistake!

Perhaps for him and for those who juggle but as someone who has a hard time keeping a steady grasp on his cigarette watching Penn juggle torches was pretty damn impressive. The drop was one rotation out of dozens and I personally didn't notice it enough to remember it.

Oh my…. So many things to say about last weekend that I won't even try to sum it up. Candace and I only discovered JREF recently, and we were lucky enough to find out about TAMII and the Slammer tour in time, and that led to one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. I only wish we’d been forum members before now so we would have known more of you before we got there. Now that we’ve joined (she’s Topaz - say “Hi” sometime) I hope we’ll get acquainted during the year so we can enjoy more of the festivities at TAMIII!

A million thanks to Linda and all of the volunteers for putting on a phenomenal show! Thanks also to all of the talented presenters that donated their time and energy, especially Julia Sweeney (I can’t shake the image of that blue-footed booby baby saying “What’re you gonna do?”), Dino (though, frankly, it’s funnier to read it than watch it; if you haven’t, find his website and read it now!), and most especially P&T. Not only did they give their best at the Meeting, and a truly memorable tour of the Slammer and lunch (I regret to inform all of you who could not attend that, yes, it WAS, in fact, worth every penny, and more! So much so that if it’s offered next year you will probably be bidding against me again!), but then Penn added a treat for the tour folks that was totally above and beyond what we expected to receive, and very much appreciated. And thanks to Moe just for being Moe. Ahhh, if only I were 20 years younger and better looking and not already blissfully in love with Topaz….

So, anyway, without further delay, here are some selected pics. (I also took a handful of short (30-60 sec) lo-res video clips, but I don’t have the space to post them to the web as they’re a bit large. If you’re interested in seeing them, email me and I can send them to you.)

Perusing the merchandise on Day 1. (http://home.san.rr.com/davesworld/TAMII/SALES.JPG)

The souvenir signing after the Slammer Tour was a bit rushed, so Candace just snuck in next to Teller for this one. (http://home.san.rr.com/davesworld/TAMII/SIGNING.JPG)

The panel discussions were one of my favorite parts of the Meeting. (http://home.san.rr.com/davesworld/TAMII/PANEL.JPG)

Slick told us all about Red Rocks. (http://home.san.rr.com/davesworld/TAMII/SLICK.JPG)

And this one’s just for the “snap” of it. (http://home.san.rr.com/davesworld/TAMII/moeristocrat.JPG)

What a trip – thanks again everyone, and hopefully we’ll see you next year!

I have seen this bit 4 times also and that was the thing I did really notice. Guess the accidental dropped torch didn't stand out for me. But I was really worried about the folks in the front row as that lit torch nearly fell on them and the said stagehand did look quite stressed as he ran up the aisle right next to me.

It seems to me that the first time I saw the bottle juggling act at least ten years ago Penn called attention to the third bottle being a real killer but then did not then go on to say the next bit of patter about how he always mentioned that the third bottle was a killer at every show but on this night it really was honesty dangerous. The last few times I have seen it, it has pretty much been the exact same though.

Maybe I am not remembering it right however and it was always the same even going back ten years. But in that case doesn't it drive Penn nuts to say the exact same dishonest patter every night going on ten years now? Sure deceit is his business but I would think it would get old and he would throw in some new bit of deceitful patter here and there.

Share and Enjoy - Aaron

Ahh... drop lines!Yes, there are a multitude of them. Some of them are quite ribald. At a "family" show, a juggler once used this line: "Oops, I was distracted by that naked lady in the aisle!" And when the adults turned to look, the juggler picked up his club and continued as if nothing had happened. Many of the children turned to look as well, and continued to look for the naked lady for quite a while afterward.Originally posted by MoeFaux

One came very close to the edge of the stage, and people with sharp eyes probably noticed Robbie, head stage hand, run out "just in case".I did notice that one of the torches almost rolled off the stage, and I also took note of the safety personnel. Even though touching the flaming end of a torch is not nearly as dangerous as people think (see this thread) (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26273), a torch rolling off a stage can be a legitimate hazard, as audience members may be wearing clothes or carrying items that could catch fire.

Now, on the subject of photos, I am surprised and pleased to report that some of my pictures turned out well. I have them on digital form on CD. Unfortunately, my computer does not recognize when it has a disk in the drive, so it may be a while before I can recover the digital versions of the photos.

Here are some additional photos of The Slammer. Thanks to shanek for hosting.

On Penn's kitchen floor, he has an "outline" of Teller (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/027_24A.JPG), brandishing a knife. Elsewhere in the kitchen, his floor reflects a map of Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. The counters in Penn's home are higher than conventional counters, because Penn is 6 feet, six inches (198 cm) tall.

Here's a photo of Penn (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/024_21A.JPG) explaining some carny games.

Penn showing us a secret door (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/023_20A.JPG) (one of many in his home).

Liza Minelli's undergarment (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/022_19A.JPG), along with one of many busts of Houdini.

Penn explaining (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/020_17A.JPG) how he determined the distance his bedroom should be from the main house. Note Penn's house inlcudes a fire pole that can be used to take a person rapidly from the second floor to the first floor. The fire pole was not demonstrated that day, because there was no quick way to get from the first floor to the second floor. For liability reasons, Penn did not offer to let us try the pole (and I don't recall anyone asking permission to try it).

Penn's office (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/018_15A.JPG), which features a human skeleton, a urinal and a sink side-by-side ("I don't know why you'd need both," Penn has said) and a poster featuring another well-known conjuror.

This is the courtyard (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/019_16A.JPG) where we ate lunch. Penn's swimming pool is at left, and if you look carefully, you can see Parrot Mason perched in one of the trees. It was too nice a day to eat indoors.

Penn explaining his invention. (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/014_11A.JPG) That's SkepticScott in the background.

Teller and Penn at lunch. (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/011_8A.JPG) Although it looks like Penn and Teller are blowing kisses at one another, I believe Teller is speaking (Yes!!) and Penn is noshing on a breadstick. The vases that you see on the table have breadsticks in them. Note that we are being served BOTTLED water... and one episode of "BULLS***!" dealt with the merits (or lack thereof) of bottled water. The water glass at lower right belonged to Mr. Randi. Shortly after this photo was taken, Penn and Teller and some of the guests donned sunglasses.

Teller and Penn autographing stuff. (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/006_3A.JPG) They had (very thoughtfully) prepared some souvenirs for those who had taken the tour of Penn's home. In addition, some folks had brought along mementos for them to sign.

Penn's mantle (shanek.ispofusa.net/TAM2/brown/005_2A.JPG) in his living room, with two busts of Houdini. The fact that Penn owned numerous busts of Houdini was something of a running joke, and I believe it may have been an inside joke directed at Mr. Randi. Mr. Randi has a Houdini bust of his own and Mr. Randi (during one of his Internet broadcasts) expressed pride in its uniqueness. If I remember correctly, the original that was the basis for that bust has been destroyed. Penn seemed to be suggesting that Mr. Randi's bust of Houdini was not all that unique. You can see some additional Houdini-related artwork at right.

Great pics and sites everybody! I had better get a few of mine in now before Hal's son dominates everybodys attention with all the pics he took. I was fortunate to sit up front one day and watched the poor kid slide across the floor on his right hip so many times to get a photo, I thought he was going to wear a hole in his pants. Here is a photo of Dr. Phil Plait demonstrating how to conduct a testicular exam. I have no idea what that had to do with Astronomy.

And finally a picture I took on Flamingo Road that needs no explination.

Actually, it's a remote controlled testicular exam. Note the placement of the wire.

Hal is covering my face in the picture where we're all pointing. I'm wondering if he meant to do that.

I guess you can't be too careful with today's sensitive electronic equipment. One ugly mug in the group can damage the camera.

If you look very closely at the reflection off a badge in the front row, you can see a reflection off a coffee urn in the hallway, which reflects off a mirror in the hall, which reflects off the chrome of a cadillac out a window three miles away, which reflects....aw, screw it, I was in the airport by then, and you have a better chance of seeing Phil's face through Hal....hmph.

Now, I know why Pirate Lad or Phil don't want to share the pics they have of them with me...but surely there must be someone...there must be some sort of evidence I was actually there...

edited to add....I know you posted one, Luciana, and I thank you....

well I've got some of you and Moe, but after what happened to Marc I wasn't sure I wanted to put them up....

really though, she had hurt her ankle and it was so sweet of you Merc and exarch and all the other guys (Scott included) to carry her around like that. And then there was the CPR you gave not only myself, but also Moe at one point. Gosh, it sure was good to have an EMT like yourself to tell us girls when we needed mouth to mouth.

We are actually pretty lucky to have made it to Vegas. If you didn't notice, the hand that wasn't holding the camera is holding a piping hot cup of coffee.

Hey, do the math!:
One laughing Driver, plus one tempting photo opportunity, minus one Hand for camera, minus one Hand for coffee, minus two Eyes not looking at road, multiplied by about 95mph on a desert highway = ONE FRIGGIN' IDIOT!

Conclusion: BigShoeStu = One Friggin' Idiot

It was pretty damn funny though.

Welcome to the forum MLynn!!! Just a small bit of fair warning... BigShuStu will shamelessly post replies just so he can outpost me. I should be posting a link to a sock Yahoo account I have that I can store my photos on. I just need to resize them from 1000x1000 to something that will load in a reasonable time.

On a side note I'd like to comment about all the phoetauxs of Moe. In the 8 or so pics of her she'd posted to the forum or sent me in PM she never smiled showing her teeth.

In every single photo I have seen of her at TAM2 she's smiling and I think that's due to more than simple satisfaction with her recent surgery. It's an accurate reflection of her personality and how she was with everyone the whole week.

I would also comment on how great her hair smells when she hasn't washed it in a few days, but I need to get back to resizing my photos.

Congrats, Kevin. You win! I see you spent 2-1/2 hours last night acheiving this staying up until 12:15am. I can only imagine you frothing at the mouth as you got closer to 50. It also makes me laugh at the thought of you staying up at least another hour or two trying to figure out how to insert your avatar without success! Oh, that's rich.
