"Referring to Def Jam artists, he (Russel Simmons) said, 'Puffy is certainly more well-liked and well-known across the world than George Bush' and 'Jay-Z is much more liked and well-known across the world than Colin Powell.'" - statment made while discussing a coalition of musicians against the war, which Mr. simmons is a part of.

See Cnn's website in the Entertainment section.

I am not trying to get into an argument about celebrities voicing their political opinions, but I found this statement to be absolutey ridiculous. Certainly it can be hard for anyone to look past their own little part in the world, but cmon, it seems as if Mr. Simmons cant see past his own industry. Plus, even if it was true, how is it relevant if they are more well-known and well-liked, they are not in the same occupation!

Incidentilly, I went to high school with his wife, Kimora (formerly perkins I believe) and did know her pretty well. She was already a successful model in europe so I am not sure why she was at a very small high school in St. Louis, but anyway, she was quite nice as I remember and took quite a bit of abuse from other girls in her class because of her success.

Who in the heck are Puffy and Jay-Z?

I'm serious. I have no interest in rap, so I have no idea who these people are. Of course, I can't say I don't like them; more to the point, I don't care about them either way.

Hi Charles,

Are you familiar with the most famous of them all?

We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first, rock 'n' roll or Christianity. John Lennon.

(A draw at the moment, since both are still around :) )

I am familiar, Bjorn.

Sadly, I fear that RocknRoll will fade away first.

Richard G:

No, this one in particulary just struck me as above and beyond the rest of them.

Can you take anything they say seriously? The entire rap world is hinged on one unpopular truth. The target for ethnic/gangsta rap is 7-16 year old white males. This is who buys the majority of the albums. Meanwhile, black americans suffer from stereotypes and bad role models. Industrial byproducts of the "ethnic" or "urban" music industry.

Whoopi Goldberg: "I don't agree, you see, I don't really view communism as a bad thing."

BUT, Commie Goldberg Wants Her Money!

Whoopi told Jay Leno that after winning a $10,000 slot machine jackpot in Las Vegas, the casino took half for the IRS.

Then: "This may be all Bush is really good for for me. I want some money back. I would like a little bit of it."

This is why we don't take celebrity advice seriously. It's from the May 28, 2002 US magazine

Ha!

I find it funny that you claim to know nothing about them, yet you knew that they were rappers (and yes, it isn't mentioned in C.L.'s post). Pop culture is pervasive, even if you try to avoid it.

C'mon, fess up :D

Watching these celebrities and muscians speak out like this in such a naive, dumb and irresponsible manner is so moving to me.

I will never support them again although I may appreciate a song or 2 and maybe a movie they happened to be in..........beyond that I'll be dead before I stop publicly upbraiding these idiots.....

I think we should all do what we can to expose these idiots for pretending to do something intelligent.

Well, with a name like Jay-Z, I kind of make assumptions. (Not too many country music or pop stars who use names with '-Z' or '-T' in them, and I don't think you'll find Luciano Pavaroti changing his name to 'Icemaster-P' any time soon.)
