"The suspects may be sent to Kenya"?!! What the hell? I knew Obama wasn't a Amurcun! Finally, some real proof! No wonder he hides that birth certificate!

Not the first time this has happened.
In the past, they've attacked an Indian warship and I think recently a Dutch vessel.
Both ended in tears

Note to pirates: if it has gun-turrets and a helicopter deck, it's not a merchant vessel.

It's a good idea to do the identification thing before the ship blows you out of the water or deploys zodiacs full of pissed-off marines.

The theory I heard is that the pirates were under the mistaken impression that our Navy was under orders not to fire on the pirates. That may have been true at one point, but the events of last year should have told them otherwise.

Anytime you're taking fire, you're allowed to defend yourself.

If the smallest weapon you have at hand is a cannon, fire away!

Apparently the pirates need a set of those "ship identification" outline drawings they used to give to sailors during WWII.

Oh, for the days of gunboat diplomacy when you could simply park your warship offshore and the inhabitants would surrender without a fight. These Somali chaps simply have no sense of decency.

Perhaps it was stupidity. Perhaps it was desperation given all the problems with living in Somalia right now.

Perhaps they were looking to be arrested.

Several pirates have ended up in the Dutch prison system.
Reportedly, they were very impressed with the electricity, running water, television and access to good quality food. They all intend to try end become citizens as soon as their jail time is over.

The Dutch authorities have since decided to imprison Somali pirates outside Europe.

An actual blockade of that port is called for.

So Piracy is OK with you?

In the Israeli press today: idiot criminal decided to repeatedly call "911" (actually 100 in Israel)... and make a series of obscene phone calls.

For some reason the police managed to discover him.

Only if it's done by dark-skinned folks against European targets.

Those Europeans have too much money anyway, and you can't really expect civilized behavior from the darkies, I suppose.

They attacked a German replenishment vessel as well, some time ago, with predictable results.

Natural selection at work...

This is like the Piranha brother's attempt to shake down the army ("Nice tanks you've got there, a pity if something happened to them...") in real life.

No, I'm talking about the British Navy here, viz. deploying our ships along their coastline.

So we withdraw from waters around Somalia and allow the pirates to run rampant.
Nice solution.

Not true. However we were rather good at hideing the costs of conflicts at that point.

Well most of the ships getting into trouble are liberian and the like so for the most part it isn't stricktly speaking our problem.

There are however diplomatic benifits to having forces there.
