View Full Version : Curse you socialised healthcare!

This morning I got a package through the post with 'NHS' on the top. Alarmed, I ripped it open, and was pleasently surprised to see that it was a free chlamydia testing kit:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p297/ldl21/IMG01343-20100405-1501.jpg
I presume every other person under 25 in the borough, if not the city got this pack, regardless of income.
All I had to do was piss into a tube and send it off, without having to pay for a stamp! All the while I remembered a friend of mine who had to pay £200 for a STD check when they went private.

What kind of government just assumes that everyone under 25 is a whore slut/cocksman (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cocksman) with an STD? I guess they would also assume anyone under 25 is also on drugs, so they will test for that too. How much money is wasted testing people who don’t have this disease? Oh well, you guys like this. Whatever floats your boat.

Er its not mandatory you know........
Its a simple cheap test that detects an easily treated infection that affects a large percentage of under 25's. I don't see much difference to the yearly medicals that seem the norm in the US, but again what ever floats ya boat.

There are frequently no symptoms and it causes sterility.
It is also quite prevalent in the UK, this age group has been shown to have the highest incidence.
There is this thing the NHS has been doing over the last decade which is quite innovative, called evidence-based medicine.
All of the testing is confidential.
Drug testing isn't that common in the UK, and I am fairly positive if a doctor wants a drug test to help with a diagnosis or treatment, they can't be used for legal purposes.
I have had a sports drug screen, and it had to be sent to the US.
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Chlamydia/Pages/Introduction.aspx
How common is it?
Between 2007 and 2008, the number of confirmed cases of chlamydia rose from 121,791 to 123,018. Young people under 25 are most likely to be infected, 65% (80,258) of all new chlamydia diagnoses made in 2008 were in people between the ages of 16 and 24.

LOL, very true, next the 'I don't sleep with dirty people' and 'I could tell if someone had an STD' excuse will be posted.
This was just brought to my attention.
Another one of those evil, evil things about socialised health care.
This is how this would work, the NHS lab would find the abnormal result, phone the GP surgery, get the out of hours number, check on the computer for the patient's address and phone number, call the out of hours service, they call the patient, no response, call the police.
What a horrible infringement on your privacy by the government.

NICE was formed five years ago.
http://www.nice.org.uk/
The recommendation in the UK is that homeopathy doesn't work and that it should no longer be supported by the NHS.
I suggest you look at the site, it is quite interesting.
You provided a link to NHS direct, not NICE, where they give advice and information on all health topics. No where on the link for homeopathy is any evidence for homeopathy given, just the history and principles of homeopathy, many of which people would not be aware of.
If you notice, there is a video about 'placebo effect' on the link you provided as well.

This would be a relevant question if anyone had asserted that everything the NHS does is evidence-based. The campaign to rid the system of this hangover from political pressure in the 1940s (when it was grandfathered in) is seriously hampered by the influence a certain heir to the throne is bringing to bear on the woo side. But progress is being made, Tunbridge Wells is closed with more to follow.
You know, Wildcat, you sound like a woo declaring that homoeopathy (for example) is obviously valid medicine because Big Pharma produced thalidomide.

Tell that to my cousin's grand-daughter, who.... has had a lot of complex jaw surgery to correct a front tooth that erupted at right angles to its proper position, culminating in a bone graft from her hip to her mouth, and a tooth implant.
Tell that to my cousin herself, who.... has been treated for type II diabetes for the past 20 years, and last year had a hip replacement with a wait time of only 5 weeks.
Tell that to another cousin, who.... is also diabetic and being treated, but who also had complex surgery to replace his oesophagus about 25 years ago.
And another cousin, who has recently had radio-iodine treatment for her hyperthyroidism, and her husband, who has had prostate surgery and is now waiting for carpal tunnel surgery.
And my mother, who can still see (sort of) thanks to 20 years of regular treatment for glaucoma, including two surgeries.
And another cousin (I've got a lot of them....) who has had two knee replacements.
And.... the list goes on and on. The times when the NHS has fallen down can be found all over the newspapers because this is the exception. The innumerable success stories and happy patients just don't get in the papers, because that would be like reporting on every aeroplane that landed safely without crashing.
I agree, it's probably the best thing that's ever happened to this country. All hail Nye Bevan.

Faecal occult blood.
If you have a positive test, you go for a colonoscopy.
I have to thank the NHS for getting me in for emergency surgery when I ruptured my achilles.
I was at the fracture clinic, they said, come back tomorrow morning, don't eat, I had my surgery by 5 pm the next day.
I stayed in two nights, saw a physio to make sure I could walk on crutches, get up and down stairs, and they let me leave when my friend came to collect me.
I was also diagnosed as being hypothyroid about a year ago, I now see the endocrinology consultant once every six months, and I get all my prescriptions for free.
