Why does alcohol make you sleepy in the day...but seems to stimulate in the evening?
What's going on? Is it to do with expectations? Food? Company?
Just wondering....:)

It's a depressant. It makes your body processes slow down any time you drink. When you are bored, this translates to "sleepy" but when you are not bored, it might merely translate to "less stressed."
A lack of stress can be rather exciting... it isn't always perceived as "calmer," though it usually is. Particularly exciting is the release of inhibitions which allows for possibilities of behavior that you might not otherwise be capable of (along with a more forgiving audience, since you have the built in excuse of being drunk).

Alcohol is a neuro-suppresant. But it does so selectively. At low levels it inhibits the frontal cortex...in fact it inhibits the inhibitory parts of the brain. As the levels rise it starts to affect the cerebellar(balance and coordination centers) and other parts of the brain.
Why it makes people more hyperactive in the a clubbing environment is because of the stimulus. Since the inhibitory part of the part is off(ie. buzzed), a buzzed person is more liable to go wild and have less inhibitions.
In the day time, the person is not getting such as much stimulus unless there is a party going on where there is no real difference between drinking in the day or night.
PS: If you're regularly drinking in the day time. That is a sign of alcoholism.

Or it is a sign that one works from midnight to 8 a.m. and likes to have a drink before retiring.

Similarly, caffeine helps me to stay awake and to fall asleep. I suppose you could say it makes it easier for me to decide when to fall asleep. I'm not sure of the mechanism there, but note that I don't drink caffeine regularly.

Or it's the weekend, or you're on vacation, or. . .

It makes me just as sleepy at night as it does during the day.

Alcohol effects me the same way. I get tired at the tavern and wide awake later on at night.
