I love this series, and just recently I saw on a BBC4 documentary that Alexander McCall Smith's books have sold well in the US too. Certainly they were the surprise bestseller of 2003 in the UK.
The writing is simple but elegant, and the characters are superbly drawn. I have never been to Africa (never mind Botswana), but it seems her tales are both definitely tied to that country but also universal in their appeal to all the human concerns, big and small.
Surely I can't be the only one to fall under her charms.
