Guns for ex-Paras as IRA threatens inquiry backlash
Reports by Thomas Harding, Ireland Correspondent
(Filed: 26/01/2004)
Several former members of the Parachute Regiment have been issued with handguns by police to defend themselves from possible retaliation after the Bloody Sunday inquiry.
Police believe the Provisional IRA has been amassing intelligence on former paratroopers through accidental leaks from the inquiry and its own alleged infiltration of Stormont. An estimated 100 former paratroopers who live in Northern Ireland are thought to be most at risk.
ergo guns seem to be good for protection.

Civilians involved in security work and ex- security forces in Northern Ireland have always been able to apply for a weapon for personal protection.
Being threatened by terrorists who will bomb a veterans day parade, hold a mans family hostage while he is forced to drive a carbomb into an Army checkpoint and blow up people out shopping is not a comparable situation. We are at war in NI. That's why firearms are not illegal in the same way in NI as they are in GB.

Now, now Shaun.
We need the recognise that the Republican movement has made sacrifices and concessions. Yes it's been painful for all concerned but the process is in place so don't say or do anything that might jeopardize it (such as mentioning the disappeared, decomissioning, IRA involvement in organised crime, Sinn Fein representatives turning up in Colombia etc).

Oh come on man, Gerry Admas and Martin Mcguiness are diplomats!
Such a lovely smile he's got......very statesmanlike. Ok, he may have been involved in muder, extortion etc but he wears such a nice suit.
Some of his can still see the blood on his hands........

How many ex-paratroopers have not been offered guns ?
Why have some been offered guns and some not ?
Why have members of other regiments not been offered guns ?
Why are most policemen un-armed ?
Why do the police have an armed unit ?
Why do the public in the UK want to keep gun restrictions ?
Why do non Britons keep telling us what we want ?
Why do we have another Gun Thread ?
Why do I feel the urge to type a recipe ?

I think we should have guns to protect us from American car thieves. In fact, we should get psychometric, as well as biometric data about Americans who come to our country, and refuse access to the ones who score too highly on the psychotic axis. That's my opinion, and via the internet, you're all welcome to it.
Anyway, haven't the Provos renounced violence?

I broadly agree but would add that all Americans wanting to come to Briton should first have go to the UK embassy in Washington. Queue for an interview then pay £200 for a visa.

Agree as well, except to suggest they have to go to the UK embassy in Brazil (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3391337.stm) to apply for their visas. But IIRC it only costs £5000 (as a donation to the Labour Party) to get fast-tracked for full British citizenship.

Well if call centres can be outsourced to India, I don’t see why Brazil couldn’t process Visa applications.

So, the goverment sees fit to issue personal weapons to paratroopers so that they might protect themselves and their families from other MPs?
