I'll try to find a link with some names later.. But I was watching a newsclip tonight, that was about some former bureaucrat testifying before congress about the Visa process before the events of 9/11..

She pointed out that there was ( is?) a question that asks:

" Do You Belong To A Terrorist Organization? "

... and added that no one had answered " Yes "...

Doh...

Weird. It isn't like a lying on the application charge is going to be worse than the underlying offense should it turns someone was fibbing by answering "no."

I do guess it could streamline the process of deportation if there is trouble with actual proof of wrongdoing. I'm not up on my immagration law, but I have a feeling there is a lower standard of proof to get someone tossed out of the country than to prove a crime. That is unless we just stick them in Cuba and leave them there...

Just convene a quick hearing, perhaps no right to counsel, and just find that this person is a member of group X, therefore he lied on the application, and goodbye!

Don't mind me, just trying to make sense of something that seems on the surface completely absurd. Occupational hazzard.

The following question turned up fairly frequently in front of the HUAC in the 1940's and 50's:

Are you, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?

People were sent to jail if they said "yes", if they didn't say "no", or if they said that the question was unconstitutional.

Some things just don't seem to change...

You mean that not only were the 19 9/11 hijackers mass murderers to the nth degree, but they were liars too? I am shocked! Shocked, I tell you.

Next thing you know, they'll violate the "no-fly" zones before comitting a suicide attack. Is there no shame? I had thought the no-fly zones would fix the problem for good, now I'm not so sure.

Hmmm, on second thought the "Do you have any explosives?" question did catch Jimbo and Ned when they were smuggling fireworks back from Mexico in the "Summer Sucks" episode. :p

It's for deportation purposes.

It may not be so long before that's not a stupid question.

PORTLAND, Ore. — It may not be long before you hear airport security screeners ask, "Do you plan on hijacking this plane?" A U.S. company using technology developed in Israel is pitching a lie detector small enough to fit in the eyeglasses of law enforcement officers, and its inventors say it can tell whether a passenger is a terrorist by analyzing his answer to that simple question in real-time.
The technology, developed by mathematician Amir Lieberman at Nemesysco in Zuran, Israel, for military, insurance claim and law enforcement use, is being repackaged and retargeted for personal and corporate applications by V Entertainment (New York).

When I was a child all the comic books had back page adds for X-Ray specs...It said I could use then to see through the clothes of that girl next door....I never had the $2.99 to buy a pair so her modesty remained safe..... Are these glasses also sold on the back pages of comic books?

I never bought a pair either, but I spent a lot of time thinking about it. That and the "build your own hover-car" kit. Somehow I suspect this equipment isn't the sort to be sold that way.

Considering that illegal immagrints are "required" to register for the draft, this is really not that surprising.

I don't know about that, but there's a Visa Waiver program for countries that we're really friendly with, like England, and even they have to fill out this incredibly stupid form that asks whether you have ever been engaged in terrorism, espionage, or sabotage, whether you were involve in genocidal actions associated with Nazi Germany, whether you have a communicable disease, and so forth.

Frank Zappa did a good song about this one; it's on The Yellow Shark.

That´s true. I had to fill out that form on the flight to Chicago travelling to TAM2.

After all these question, there is the reminder: "If you have answered any of these questions with YES, you might me denied entry to the United States."
