One of the things I lost with my old PC was the FTP software I used. I am now using the simple web-based FTP client on GoDaddy.com, which leaves a lot tp be desired. Anyone have any recommendations? I don't remember the name of the one I used before, but might recognize it if I saw it.

I use WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/index.php). It is simple, free, open source, and does SSH secure transfers.

Filezilla is probably the most used freeware FTP client these days. In the late '90s a popular one was LeechFTP, and I've used it more than any other.

Well, others have already recommended WinSCP and FileZilla, which are good GUI ftp clients, so I'm going to point out that Windows (and certainly any Linux or UNIX, probably MacOs as well) has a perfectly usable command line ftp client. Real men don't need GUI's. Open up a command prompt and type "ftp hostname" or "ftp IP address".

Real men don't need FTP clients. We use telnet to open the required FTP ports.

Or we write our own FTP clients.

If you use the command-line FTP a lot, ncftp (cross-platform) is great. Or for just fetching files, wget.

Assuming you are running Windows, WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/index.php) works very well.

Real men don't use telnet or FTP. We copy the file to a diskette and deliver it by hand.

Has anyone compared Filezilla and WinSCP? Advantages/disadvantages of each?

I used to use Filezilla but hadn't yet loaded it on my new laptop

isn't filezila normal FTP only ? WinSCP allow use of SFTP too (secure FTP). That adds an encryption layer.

YOu can also try free ssh a file ransfer client which allow sftp like winscp. Is drag and drop too, and I prefer the setup to winscp, although you can automate (do batch) with winSCP so it depends if you want to automate your transfert or not.

Filezilla does do SFTP, which was why I ended up using it when we still used an FTP server.

Try SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/)

SmartFTP was considered the best freeware client - when it was still freeware. Although it's now payware, you can still find old freeware versions floating around, which for most people, will do the job quite well.

Agreed, it was good. Used that before it went commercial, causing me to switch to Filezilla. Sorta similar anyway.

There's a few other good ones available too, so I won't knock the others.

When I started with my first web site, I used a free programme I got off Tucows, called FTP Explorer. I got on very well with it. Many years later, when migrating to a new computer, I found I couldn't migrate the free programme and it was insisting I upgraded to the pay version.

I decided to cough up, and the pay version (which wasn't expensive) is a lot more functional and user-friendly. However, it sounds as if I should have investigated Filezilla....

Such as?

I tried to copy a directory over from the server and my entire home on that server started copying over. It then refused to cancel when I asked it to and I had to shut it down via the task manager. When I reopened the connection with filezilla it continued on where it left off, transferring the files, so I had to close it again. Ive no idea why it happened but id say it was probably just a one off thing.
