View Full Version : Deactivating by Registry?

Once I installed an antivirus in a computer that also ran a payroll program. This payroll connected to the Internet to verify for authenticity, but the AV interfered and didn't let it work. Then I had trouble uninstalling the AV.

So I was wondering: if I make a backup of the Registry, can I "deactivate" a newly installed program by simply restoring the Registry?

I know files will remain in the hard disk, which I don't mind. I just want to the computer to work exactly like it was, just in case.

It would probably be simpler to roll back to a system restore point, assuming you didn't disable it: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

a) sounds like a bad antivirus program
b) try running msconfig and restarting

but there is something about turning off your AV to connect to the internet that is just very very wrong. Try asking on a forum specific to your antivirus and someone should be able to tell you how to allow a specified program to do specific things.

Gee... I didn't know this existed, and I think this may be the ideal solution.

In fact, I got mad at the payroll software instead, maybe because of my ideals of how software should work. OTOH, I have never had any other trouble with AVG. I wanted to uninstall it or turn it off because Payroll is more important.

The software I am asked to install next is for administration of phone use through a "hub" (Panasonic insists on calling it Advanced Hybrid System, but in MX we call it "Commuter"). I worry that Windows will detect the phone line and install something that may mess with the payroll software... Sadly, I cannot use another computer at the time.

I will give it a try on Saturday and be sure to have a point of return, as suggested.

ETA: THANK YOU!
