Not wanting to sound churlish, but that is one reason I wonder about the American reaction to 9/11. In terms of numbers, it really was small beer, unless, as you say, you happen to be one of the unfortunate people involved. For each of the people involved in any of the other events your link mentions, the suffering is just as bad.
