The Louisville Area Skeptics, in association with the Spalding University College of Social Sciences and Humanities, will host the James Randi Educational Foundation's workshop "Divination with Pendulums and Dowsing Rods". It will be a comprehensive 3-hour, hands-on program covering the history, current application, and construction of divination devices, presented from a skeptical (science based) perspective, and featuring the research of James Randi on the topic. The workshop will emphasize how paranormal beliefs like dowsing are not trivial, and have real-world implications.

Participants will make both pendulums and dowsing rods, and devise randomized, double-blinded trials to test their effectiveness.

The workshops will be led by Dr. Christina L. Stephens, a science writer and biomechanics researcher who writes for the JREF and at ziztur dot com. She is chair of the Fringe Science Investigations Committee of the Skeptical Society of Saint Louis. Joining her will be Zi Teng Wang, a scientist and amateur magician, and long-time skeptic with special interest in evolutionary biology and the American educational system.

Workshop registration is FREE for JREF members and is $45 for non-members. Since an introductory membership in the JREF is only $50, it makes sense to go ahead and become a member of the JREF, then attend the workshop free while also enjoying membership benefits.

Register online at the JREF site or at the door. Either way, please RSVP at the Louisville Area Skeptics meetup page.

The venue is now officially the first floor Lectorium in the Egan Leadership Center (ELC) at Spalding University, located at 901 South Fourth St. Parking will be free in Lot E; this is accessed by turning onto the alley off fourth street immediately before you get to the ELC. This lot is immediately south of the ELC.

The workshop will run from 1:00pm to approximately 4:00pm.

At 6:00pm, please join us at Mulligan's for a Science Cafe, with special guest presenter Michael Blanford, the founder of the Skeptical Society of St. Louis, and the Director of Educational Programs at the James Randi Educational Foundation. Michael will present a talk on Cryptozoology! RSVP for the Science Cafe separately at meetup.

Thanks, hope you can make one or both events! Tell your friends!
