After listening to the Lost Ship of the Desert episode (Skeptoid #209) I thought back to the day I spotted a mighty seafarin' galleon deep in the dusty desert. It was 2003, mateys, when I spotted this monster in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. Yaaaaarrh. Ye can't deny the evidence afore yer very eyes. She moved through plumes 'o dust as if she were a ghost, as if she were on wheels. I'm a believer now, lads.

A mountaineer, storm-stained and brown
from farthest desert touched the town
And, striding through the town held, up
Above his head a jewell'd cup.
He put two fingers to his lip,
He whispere'd wild, he stood a-tip,
And lean'd the while with lifted hand,
And said, "a ship lies yonder dead,"
And said, "Doubloons lie sown in sand
along yon desert dead and brown,

That's wonderful. Why didn't Brian read this old poem on the show?

Ye got me drift, Fnord. She was a fine vessel. Tall and real as they come. Far out on the playa she rolled.

It was called La Contessa, and she used to get in trouble for speeding and reckless driving. Came to sad end, though.

Maybe a production still from the Third POTC film . They shot the "Davy Jones Locker" sequence (in one of the few clever bits in that bloated mess Davy Jones Locker is protrayed as a ship stranded in a huge desert) in Nevada.
But, yeah, the folklore about a Spanish Galleon loaded with Gold being stranded somewhere in the Southwest is a classic bit of American Folklore.

dudalb - Ye are hereby sentenced to swab the deck for eternity.

I took that photo. The monster ship cruised the desert, huntin' whales and runnin' down ravers. Twas quite a spectacle at night, ya unbelievin' scallywag. Deep in the desert are things the likes of you couldn't fathom--like the livin' tornado of fire!

Wow. I was being sarcastic, I thought it was a screencap from Pirates of the Caribbean (Black Pearl grounded in that fantasy world of Jack Sparrow's):D.

Pity she burned up.

Nope. Guess again. The clue is "Black Rock Desert."

"The Black Rock Desert is an arid region in northern Nevada with a lakebed that is a dry remnant of Pleistocene Lake Lahontan."

Soooo..... The ship was sailing on that lake during late Pleistocene, and then got stranded there when it dried up ?
