View Full Version : Non-native English speakers at TAM 8

Since it seems customary for different nationalities to check via forum threads whether fellow Aussies / Canadians / Brits / ... will attend TAM:
Who will be at TAM 8 *not* originating from the US, Canada, Australia, or the UK?
I deliberately wrote "originate" - I am coming from the UK to TAM, since I live here at the moment, but actually I am German... ;)

Out of curiosity, should we include native English-speakers who can fluently converse in a different language in this?

I am Chinese. I have lived in US for many years, but still I am not native English speaker. Glad to see from the forum that there will be many people from different countries, so I will be one of many who speak with an accent.

I am always totally amazed at the non-English-as-a-native-language people, that they can speak my language so totally better than many English-is-my-first-language people bother to.

The only English you need to know is "Scrutinizer, may I buy you a beer?"

OK, I already know that phrase. Now, I'll put it into practice as soon as I can :)

My message to English-as-a-native-language folks at TAM: please be patient with me....Of course. Anyone who isn't patient is rude and should be dumped in a foreign country with only a phrasebook and forced to make their way home. Oh, and you get to write their phrasebook.

My native language is Japanese. In college, I used English as my foreign language requirement since my high school French was not good enough.

That's probably because they use the "pure" or orthodox language, as learned at school, as opposed to natives who use local slang sometimes.

Nahh, not that serious, .... I mean not serious enough for me to write their phrasebook :p

Why? I've never had any trouble understanding you. I see no reason to be patient whatsoever.

I speak ASL, Danish and Spanish. Not that any of those often need translators or anything. I can also understand Swedish and Norwegian. And sometimes even English.

Hahahhahaha...No. No, wifi access at the hotel is horribly expensive.
However, if you have 4G (like Sprint 4G or Clear), that looks like it might be doable (depending on reception inside the building).
If you don't have 4G, it's possible someone who has it might create an access point for you.

I can offer an iPad, on which I'll have the rest of my 3G month to burn. I actually even planned to have Serenity on the pad, but somebody didn't return the DVD in time.
Oh, and to get back on topic: I am noticeably not a native speaker. Though my accent is not as crisp as Yogzotot's. :p

My "crisp Teutotic accent", please! Don't remind me of that racist 10:23 haggler - "You are a German Nazi, I won't take orders from you not to take homeopathy. Don't besmirch an English medical tradition!" Teh stupid...
The exchange happened in the comments to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwK1C_yMlXw
And yes, that's me doing the talking in the YouTube video. My "crisp Teutonic accent" (see comments by kevinjohnmorris starting at about page 5) is less pronounced (ha!) when I talk normally and don't read a text taped to the forehead of the camerawoman...

I have Firefly and Serenity on my Archos tablet. Assuming they have TVs, no DVDs are necessary.

Last year, I brought my netbook and (illegally) tethered my iphone to it. Then I updated my OS and the free tethering disappeared. (Yes, I realized I can jailbreak the phone. I did, and it worked too slowly so I restored the OS)
However, I acquired an ipad with 3G, so I'll bring that instead.
