View Full Version : Geocaching at TAM

I've recently begun geocaching, and I was wondering if there are going to be any other cachers at TAM. I'd like to track down a couple of caches while I'm in Vegas, and I know there are at least a couple of caches within walking distance of South Point. However, I'm not too excited about wandering out into the desert all by my lonesome. Would anyone be interested in joining me?

Go out in the desert in the middle of July? Sure, I'll join you!

I'm into teh letterboxing so I'm aiming to get to a few of the ones on the strip, but I don't have a gps so I've never been geocaching yet. Depending on where it is, I'd be up for it. The urban ones would be good.

By an extremely odd coincidence, I will be desert stress-testing a survey grade GPS system in Las Vegas that week. Since I will already be wandering around the area with the equipment, I certainly don't mind helping you find stuff. I will only be doing this Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, so if you would like to get together then and keep my testing log notes for me wander around the desert, let me know. I do have a station wagon (with working air conditioning!), so if you would like to range further out, that should be fine as long as I am back in time for meals. I get cranky when I am not fed on a regular basis.

Oh, and bring lots of water, we can stop at a 711 on the way out. I will have a 70 oz. Camelbak, but I ain't sharing!

It's conceivable I might come along to supervise. Unless I'm sleeping. In the A/C.

Seconded on being back in time for meals. There are a handful of caches, maybe four or five, that would be in reasonable walking (or short driving) distance of the hotel. One of which is actually in the parking lot of the hotel. We could probably pick up a couple nearby and be back in time for sushi. I can plan to be up early in order to get this done before it gets too close to lunch time.

I'll pack water, and remind me also to get some SPF 100,000 or I will certainly die of sun... murder...

I spoke to him about it recently. He said he had gone out with some folks last year to pick up the ones near the hotel. That's what gave me the idea of starting this thread, actually. I figured he probably wouldn't be all that interested given that he's probably gotten them already.

Early works for me. Let me know what you mean by "early", and we can meet up for breakfast and head straight for the caches. If you can give me the coordinates for the caches you would like to try, I can get them uploaded ahead of time which will save a bit of time in the field.

I keep some SPF 50,000 in the car, but no 100,000. You might also want a hat.

I dunno how much of a morning person you are, but I consider 7 or 8 to be pretty early. I'm fairly flexible, though, so I'll let you make the call about how early you want to get started. Just let me know when and where you're having breakfast and I'll meet you there.

Also, check your PMs for info about cache coordinates.

Got the PM, thanks. I will load those up this weekend. It isn't any trouble to enter them manually, so don't bother with the GPX file.

Let's plan to meet Thursday morning at 7:00 for breakfast, either the buffet or the cafe is fine with me, although there will probably be a mob at the buffet, judging by the official "Breakfast" thread. I want to get out as early as possible to avoid the worst of the heat and still have time to make it back for a shower before the lunch meet-up at 11:00.

As long as we limit it to the Del Mar Lounge, I'm in.

There are caches within 50 feet of the doors to South Point?

I think he means 10 feet. It will be way too hot to walk 50 feet.

I typed 10, then thought "That sounds WAY too lazy... let's say 50 to include the parking garage... "

Ever thought of applying for the MDC?

By an extremely odd coincidence, I will be desert stress-testing a military grade dowsing rod in Las Vegas that week. I am pretty sure I would be able to get to all of the goodies, before the rest of you, with your puny GPS devices. If any of you want to help me carry the energy crystals I need to power it, you can come along. I will have a rental car (presumably with working A/C, but you never know). Since the device is magical, I see no reason why we can't make it back in plenty of time for meals and aura tuning. I get cranky when my aura is not tuned right, in the afternoon.

Oh, and don't bring any water with you! The rod tends to lose accuracy in the presence of water. Or aluminum. Or certain types of other beverage containers, for some reason.

Actually, we were out for a couple hours last year. It was hot, but not too bad.

"Don't Drink and Dowse", in other words. :)Exactly right!

And, we probably shouldn't bring any cell phones, tasers, carnelian pedulums, satellite radios, or keychains with more than three keys on them.

Each of those seems to interfere with the device, for some reason.

I was out on the strip at midnight and it was too damned hot... I thought the desert was supposed to get cold at night.

"The Strip" <> "desert". While Vegas is surrounded by desert, it is not of itself one. Where the Skeptchick party was last year infringed upon the desert, but you have to get out a bit to leave the heat island of the city.
