Lithium market could bloom as tide goes out on oil
June 23, 2010 by Adrian Addison
Bolivia has one of the largest Lithium reserves in the world. Lithium is not much to look at. It's a soft and light, silver-white metal known for its use in mood stabilising drugs. But the 25th most abundant element on earth could, one day, help cure the world of its addiction to oil -- as a key ingredient in batteries.

US geologists last week released the results of a survey showing around a trillion dollars worth of minerals in Afghanistan, which could make the war-ravaged state "the Saudi Arabia of lithium", according to a Pentagon memo.

do we begin to speculate on peak lithium

Phhhththttht. Where are you going to get the electricity to charge up all those lithium batteries, except from burning fossil fuels?
And how much electricity is used in the refining process?
Some day soon the realities of electric and hybrid cars will be realized. But many millions will make many millions until that day.

I heard someone on the tube the other day saying that we'll be extracting lithium from sea water before bothering to pull it out of the ground in Afghanistan, which I assume nature has done to leave such large deposits in the Salar's of Bolivia and Chile.

America still has a stranglehold on the helium market. We are the festive balloon superpower.

Solar power is still too inefficient and location-dependent. Nuclear is the best option for the near future; until we manage a breakthrough in fusion power.

Yes, but afaik the market for energy storage solutions such as lithium is to make solar more efficient. You don't need to store nuclear energy because it is a base load supply, just like our coal-fired energy that we currently use. SO the idea that we'd be using fossil-fuels to fill the lithium batteries, which was the assertion I was responding to, is flawed because there is no demand to store large amounts of fossil-fuel energy whereas there is a demand to store solar energy.

Toyota locks down lithium for hybrid batteries with new mining deal
January 20, 2010 | Tom Slater (http://venturebeat.com/author/tom-slater/)
About 75 percent of the hybrid cars on the road are built by Toyota, and it plans to double their production in 2010. In 2012, when it debuts its new plug-in Prius (http://green.venturebeat.com/2009/12/14/toyota-launches-plug-in-hybrid-poised-to-continue-green-car-dominance/), it expects to be churning out a million of them. Just one problem: the lithium needed for its hybrid battery packs (pictured) is incredibly scarce. But today, the company took a big step toward a solution, sending subsidiary Toyota Tsusho (http://www.taiamerica.com/) to Argentina to secure all the lithium it needs.

The main problem with Afghanistan as a source is its remote location and the state of war in the country.

Ah, hybrids, I was thinking more of large scale energy storage, not cars. I guess my above posts are somewhat redundant.

Dewd,
all we have to do is build the batteries already charged...

There. Fixed it for you.
