So, at TAM8 I finally discovered that I'm thinking of a different Bill Nighy (http://www.moviecritic.com.au/images/bill-nighy-in-love-actually.jpg) than everyone else is.
I would like to see TAM at a different time of year. That July weather is ****** ridiculous! April/May maybe (http://www.lasvegasdirect.com/weather_averages.gif)?

TAM used to be in January. I believe part of the reason it was moved to the summer months was so that students and teachers could attend with less disruption to the school year.

I asked Randi about next year. The meeting is expected to be at the same time in Las Vegas. The location has not been verified. Sorry, daughter.
Las Vegas is a great place for TAM because of the availability of people like Banachek, Penn and Teller, Mac King, etc. and variety of evening entertainment and eating places. You don't have to stay at the hotel the entire conference.
Also, the stay for me in Las Vegas is very cheap. I went home with the same amount of cash and the credit card balance as I came in with. It takes a lot of patience to win enough on penny slot to cover the cost of dinner and drink for five days. :)

I would love to see Vincent Bugliosi give a talk on the JFK Assassination!
The interesting thing about the JFK Assassination is that I would rattle off evidence proving Oswald's guilt and even skeptics would say, "I didn't know he shot and killed a Dallas police officer." Or, "I didn't know he worked at the Texas School Book Depository Building."
The facts about the JFK Assassination are publicly available and the majority of this country doesn't know anything about them. Yet, they buy into a conspiracy about the assassination. The name of Bugliosi's book on the subject is Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Reclaiming History. It's a nice title, because this major piece of American/World History has been hijacked by paranoid conspiracy theorists. Pseudo-historians that don't give a damn about the disservice they are doing to the American people and the World at large by spreading their BS.
This the dedication in Reclaiming History:
To the historical record, knowing that nothing in the present can exist without the paternity of history, and hence, the latter is sacred, and should never be tampered with or defiled by untruths.
Also from the book, about conspiracy theories surrounding the JFK Assassination and the damage they cause:
Unless this fraud is finally exposed, the word believe will be forgotten by future generations and John F. Kennedy will have unquestionably become the victim of a conspiracy. Belief will have become unchallenged fact, and the faith of the American people in their institutions further eroded. If that is allowed to happen, Lee Harvey Oswald, a man who hated his country and everything for which it stands, will have triumphed even beyond his intent on that fateful day in November.
- Vincent Bugliosi, Reclaiming History, p.1011.
I hope to see Bugliosi speaking at a TAM one of these days on this important subject.

We are very much at the mercy of Vegas Hotels (tm) for several items. Outside catered food is not permitted at most locations. The hotel catering department will do whatever we ask... and your registration fee will go up accordingly. If I recall correctly, even a simple box sandwich lunch worked out to almost $15 per person. I shudder to think what the multiple hot entrees cost. Coffee(-like beverage) is cheap. I was happy that there was an oranje juice-like beverage and small cans of cranberry juice. Perhaps they were out by the time some of you young kids got up?
The other problem at least at South Point that someone mentioned was power outlets and wi-fi. This has been discussed before. There simply are no available power outlets on the walls in the large conference room. I can't speak to the smaller rooms. Again, IIRC, the hotel wanted something like $100 to run a single extension cord. Wi-fi is a money maker for the hotel, just like the food. Why give us cheap internet when they are getting $13 per night per room? I know others have mentioned the cost of internet in the conference room - "business" travellers can afford more, right? :(

More time between talks for Q&A, though this still requires the emcee to enforce speaker compliance with time limits.
If we keep growing, conference tracks. Yeah, this means you miss some things, but there are certain topics that are of more interest than others.
A way for Jeff to sleep more. Seriously. He handles so much minutiae that he does not sleep much. As entertaining as watching his eyes spin may be, it can lead to mistakes and/or burnout. Maybe this cannot be avoided unless more paid JREF staff is hired. Volunteers can only do so much as someone has to be trained and/or held responsible for things.
A thermostat in the conference room that really works. I know cooling is difficult in very large rooms, especially when the attendee load changes suddenly and Vegas is hot by definition. But DANG it was cold in there sometimes. [/whine]

I think I heard that breakfast was just over $20 per head, the lunches between $30 and $40.
Wi-fi is a money maker for the hotel, just like the food. Why give us cheap internet when they are getting $13 per night per room? I know others have mentioned the cost of internet in the conference room - "business" travellers can afford more, right? :(
I ended up paying for the room wifi as it was the only way I could get online; I was disappointed to find that didn't give me access in the conference room too (the bar would have been nice, too, but there wasn't any wifi there at all); maybe they could give a concession like that, if not free wifi? If I come again, I'll be looking to get myself something like the 4G wifi or a SIM card with data.
ETA: I've just remembered that, walking around the Strip on Monday, a number of the casinos and hotels there did have free, open, wifi. I guess they make their money in other ways, maybe higher room prices, but it's not a given the wifi will be charged for.

Gerald Posner could fill the same role. Also, he could talk about MLK.The first professional skeptic event I went to featured him talking about his books. I also met my first skeptic & atheist girlfriend there. :D
We are very much at the mercy of Vegas Hotels (tm) for several items.I shudder to think what the multiple hot entrees cost.Last year Linda remarked that most of the registration fee goes for meals. The only good thing about it is that the more attendees we have, the more food we need, and the more free room-nights we get for the speakers. Although with the hotel rates as low as they were, that's not much of a break.
A way for Jeff to sleep more. Seriously. He handles so much minutiae that he does not sleep much. As entertaining as watching his eyes spin may be, it can lead to mistakes and/or burnout. Maybe this cannot be avoided unless more paid JREF staff is hired. Volunteers can only do so much as someone has to be trained and/or held responsible for things.Seconded! Jeff needs to sleep before he starts making mistakes.

She was at TAM 3. She was easily the least interesting speaker there. This was kind of sad, because she was also the speaker with the most practical information.
Another wish would be for several JREF staff to have some speaking time. I'd have loved to have heard Jeff and Hal talk a little about their involvement with the JREF and what goes into making TAM.
I'd be equally eager to hear from the people who try to fill their shoes next year.

I’d like to see the main sessions reduced to afternoons only and have options in the mornings ranging from basic skeptical issues to more controversial or esoteric topics. I know that the Thursday workshops’ do some of this but I found the Science Based Medicine workshops annoyingly basic in their content and some of the speakers were tedious for me but appriciated by others. At times I felt like I was at a convention rather than a conference.

I beg to differ. A kilt (or a great T-shirt, stuffed flying pigasus, gorgeous surly-ramic, etc) gives me a reason to talk to a stranger. Opening a conversation isn't always easy but the attendees are worth it. A little ice-breaker is appreciated.
More wish list stuff: In another thread, someone mentioned that forum member David Wong is an associate editor at Cracked, an online humor magazine that often deals with skeptical subjects. :D That might be taken the wrong way but the ensuing "What's wrong with my legs?!" conversation might be worth it. I take it you didn't talk to the kid with stuffed animal. He was very blase' about it, in an almost Monty Python sort of way. Quite amusing.

They are not cheap. And don't forget the mandatory 19% gratuity, and 8.1% sales tax! So that $15 per person breakfast cost is really over $19. Multiplied by 1300 means that breakfast for one day cost nearly $25,000. Oh my, I wish I hadn't done the math.

I'd like to hear the date announced as soon as possible. From what I heard, I very much doubt we will be at South Point next year. I know there is a lot of organising/research for the JREF to do, but for the international contingent, there is a greater need for these kind of trips need to be budgeted/planned well in advance (for me, starting in about 2-3 months). Having a TAM in Australia won't stop me from attending TAM Vegas, but to do so I want to be ready to jump on the earlybird flight sales ASAP. It cost me a lot more than it should have this year, due to buying my flight at the wrong time of year. If I can't get the cheap flights, I won't be able to go. :(

- Stephen Fry would be, well, amazing.
- Fewer panels. I was actually really looking forward to those, and they were the most disappointing part for me. Much more focus from individuals.
- Perhaps consider the TEDtalk 20 minute thing. Perhaps a tight TED20+10QA.
- More Moon Hoaxer and Healer guy types... although I don't know how you'd manage that. But boy did they bring a little life to the party. You could almost hear gears grinding when it started to become obvious that something non-standard was developing in real time...
- I thought SouthPoint was fine. I'd think the Orleans would be equally adequate. If we can move TAM to immediately prior to or post MAGIC LIVE! then I would be in heaven (well, not *heaven* per se.... but you get the idea.)
- Next year I am committed to joining Skeptics in the Tub. A fine idea that I didn't hear about until after I had other evening plans.

Not really. At the Skepchick party for TAM 7, you could see stars when in the backyard.

I was just going off the impressions of a person who has never been there but the further you are from the night lights the better.

I missed that event. I wasn't notified they were going to be there. :(
We looked EVERYWHERE for you to notify you, but couldn't find you. They had to settle for mentioning it multiple times on stage at Dragon*Con and in three separate posts on Skepchick :(

Lawrence Krauss and PZ Myers...maybe they're not professional general skeptics, but Krauss can speak well, and PZ hardly does any public speaking, and I'd like to see him.
Then again, these guys might have gone to earlier ones, but I don't know, def. not 7 or 8 at least :P.
+1 for Roach as well. And Emily Rosa would be nice, even though she apparently had to cancel for 7 :(. I know she only did the one things, but it'd be cool anyway because she did it when she was a kid.

Another thing I would like to add bring back web streaming. The problem with webstreaming is one of copyright. At TAM7, they played (among other things) excerpts from The Big Bang Theory. These went out free and unedited over the internet, which was a no-no. So if webstreaming is going to occur, they're going to have to be VERY careful about what gets streamed. The JREF does not need an intellectual property problem.

From what I was told, another reason for why there was no webstreaming this year is that it cuts into the sales of DVDs. If that's true, it is unlikely to change for TAM 9.
What I want to see at TAM 9: Me :) I just wish the dates were announced, plane tickets from Norway are cheap now, but they will get much more expensive.

TAM 8 attendee James Sellers coined the perfect name for TAM9:

Okay, so 9 out of 10 for utilizing a clever pun...

So, TAM is a celebration of bad things that will not go away, is that it?
Okay, I honestly don't think the words "TAM9 from Outer Space" are an issue. It is exactly the sort of pun I would probably invent myself (except in this case, I didn't).
But, if I were, hypothetically speaking, to strongly object to the name, you would have to come up with a better argument than that, to convince me, otherwise.
If I were, hypothetically speaking, to strongly object to the name, I would also point out that the movie it references contained a lot of pseudo-scientific junk: Including resurrection of the dead. But, since I don't, I won't.

With regards to "TAM9 From Outer Space," while the associated movie is so bad it's good (IMO), no one has mentioned that it also probably inspired the "special space science and skepticism focus" that is one of the themes this year.
As an astronomy fan, that makes me happy. :)

So will they replace Randi on video link , halfway through (like Bela Lugosi) with old film of him from past TAMS?
And will anyone notice the difference?

No, Rrose. Randi will be broadcasting from the Satellite of Love though. :)
