Have you been to a TAM or a skeptics in the pub and thought:
"Hey, I could do a better talk than this!"
No?
Hows about:
"I could do a talk that doesn't completely suck!"
No?
Ok, hows about:
"I have to tell everyone about the global lizard illuminati conspiracy!"
Yes? Fabulous.

So I'm going to try and organise an open mic night in London during the TAM fringe week. You'll get 5-10 minutes to do a short talk on a topic that interests you that falls loosely into the realm of science and skepticism. We'll need at least 12 speakers- so far, I have a tentative 3.

Exact details are to be confirmed, but what I'm looking for is anyone that would like to do a short talk, and I'd like to know which days around TAM London suit them.

Please PM me, or reply to this thread if you think you have something interesting to say.

No dessicated mermaid impressions please :)

I might do one! Perhaps a quick salespitch on the merits of using the practical applications of evolutionary theory, as a focus, when debating creationists. It seems to get them on the defensive faster than any other strategy I have seen. And, hopefully, I can explain why, in 10 minutes or less!!

Sounds great. Are you going to be about before or after TAM London?

Sounds great. Are you going to be about before or after TAM London? Probably both. I have never been to London before, so I want to spend a whole bunch of time exploring the place, surrounding the days of TAM.

Though, my plans have not been fully finalized, yet.

I've never been to London either, and dont have things solidified yet either. I have hotel from the 14th, but no plane tickets yet; not sure how long I want to stay...

My only definite plans really involve living in the Science Museum and the National Gallery. If I stay longer, I might do a 'quick' train trip to Paris.

I'm afraid I've been busy with other projects, and this one has slipped behind. However, I'm determined to organise an event, even if it gets pushed back to Tam London 3.

My biggest fear has been organising an event, then having another fringe event enticing people away, so if this was ever going to happen it was always going to be last moment :)

What are people doing on Friday night? I won't be going to the ghost stories thing. If I find a room in a pub somewhere, who will join me for an open talk night?

If this does get going, I might still be in it.

This will be a skeptics in the pub event - ultimately under 16s will be allowed unless licensing terms or venue policy dictate otherwise.

Of course that doesn't help if you just wish to protect the young ones from the horror of a pub side room..

Of course, being a friday, it might be impossible to get a pub room :)

There is this fringe event too....

http://www.tamlondon.org/blog/2010/08/25/skeptics-in-the-pub-quiz/

Start:October 14, 2010 7:00 pm
End:October 14, 2010 11:30 pm
Cost:£2
Venue:The Phoenix
Address:37 Cavendish Square, London, United Kingdom, W1G 0PP

Enjoy some pub grub and sup an ale in the basement bar of The Phoenix while your quiz-mistress Rebecca Watson tests your grey matter (or should that be gray matter?) on subjects of science, history, film (movies to the rest of you), music and skepticism. Make new acquaintances and win some fun prizes!

Entry is £2 per person and teams should be no larger than 6 people – don’t worry if you don’t have enough for a team, as we can join you up with folks on the night.

The upstairs bar will be open if you just fancy mingling and grabbing a bite to eat.

Leave the kid outside on the sidewalk.

Many shops and pubs will actually provide some place where you can tether your kid, often with a bowl of fresh water.

What's the difference?

I'm not sure, but I think one of them might represent your own species.

The larval form of Scrut's species is called a "petri dish"

OK, well it looks like there's no way I'm going to be able to organise it this year in time... ultimately Friday is not a day of the week when venues are readily and freely available. I hope to get something sorted for next year perhaps.

Who fancies getting together for a meal out somewhere on Friday night?

OK, I'm determined to get a bit of momentum behind this for next year, and a perfect time to get interest is talking to people this year at this event.

I've therefore created a facebook group for anyone interested in coming or participating.
