Are you going to keep the secret about the mysterious guest appearance until the Conference?

Some of us here are curious!

That's a protest. :p

Well, you must always remember that I'm both shallow and immature.

There are two: one real mystery guest, and a second that will be announced as soon as we get a confirmation that she is able to get flights, hotel, etc.

So, I'm only being partly mean. But I'm still immature.:)

For those of us who wont be there, how do we obtain copies of the papers presented at the meeting ?

I'll see if we can't get them posted on the website after the conference is over.

SkepticReport.com would be honored to publish them! Do you think that would be possible, Linda? :)

I'm guessing that it's Susan Blackmore.

I'm guessing that it's also Carl Sagan - now, that would be a surprise guest!!! :D

Britney Spears. She probably has an open schedule now that she has been fired by Pepsi.

Now that the testosterone-fueled imaginations have cooled somewhat...

Kinda looks like Friday is open, before registrations. Did I see somewhere that there's airboat rides available down that way? How much? How long? Website?

Always wanted to ride in an airboat...now if there were somewhere around there where they'd take you out for an hour or two, and teach you to drive it...if such a place exists, any other adrenaline/testosterone junkies wanna split the cost of a few hours?

Jack of Hearts
15th January 2003, 08:46 PM
Charlie, has your doctor specifically given you permission for airboat jaunts? ;)

Keep in mind, I only ask because I'm staying in your room! :D

In this particular case, f the doctor...I'll go with an ear-to-ear grin on my kisser. And the room's already on the plastic -- you can use what ya owe me to help ship the body home...:D

Charlie, there is a place to get an airboat ride: Billie Swamp Safari on the Big Cypress Reservation...about 10 miles west of the hotel and 19 miles north. They have swamp buggy eco-tours and airboat rides, alligator and snake shows, and a Seminole Village . Airboat rides are $12, the swamp buggy tour is $20. Open daily 8:30AM- 6:30
PM. See for details. www.seminoletribe.com/safari (http://www.seminoletribe.com/safari )

And I'm surprised none of you guys have answered Girl 6's question about dress code by telling her to dress as her avatar. (She ducks....oooh, sorry Girl 6). How does "casual business" sound?

Unfortunately, a schedule conflict will prevent our other secret speaker from attending.

It was to be the young lady who wowed the medical world by her JAMA paper debunking "theraputic touch"

perhaps next year! :)

SkepticScott
17th January 2003, 09:53 PM
Emily Rosa? "Perhaps next year" sounds great. I met her and her father briefly after the 1999 Ig Nobels. She accepted the Science Education Ig for the Kansas and Colorado State Boards of Education. http://www.improbable.com/ig/ig-top.html That's Ms. Rosa speaking in the photograph at the top of the page listing all the past winners, and Randi is in the bottom picture of the "Highlights from part ceremonies" page.

FYI, Jacques Benveniste is the only two-time Ig Nobel winner, winning the Chemistry Ig in 1991 and 1998! The Igs are a blast!

Okay, so the bunch is going to KSC Thursday real early in the ayem...

SkeptuMaloo and I are gonna find a local woowoo and an airboat and go play Amos Moses on Friday...anyone wanna join us for an airboat ride? Plenty of time before registration opens Friday...

But the burning question is, where and when are we all going to meet for these various excursions?

Well, my suggestion is that we figure out a central point of contact and take it from there. Also, we can decide on a time to meet in the morning to start off with.

How about 6:50 in the lobby for the KSC trip? That'll give us ten minutes to meet, organize and wait for late-comers. I'll be the guy carrying a large pair of binoculars.

Love,
John

Today is the one-month anniversary of The Affair Of The Heart.
The sawbones sez nothing's gonna fall out and skitter under a filing cabinet, so keep eating right, take my pills, good deal on quitting smoking, keep with the exercise program, and he'll see me in September for a full-bore stress test...September??? I sez...September, he sez...doesn't appear to be any reason to see him any sooner, so just keep healing...which to me translates into 'So far, so good' and 'No news is good news'.
I have official permission to go to Florida, with endorsements for airboats, swamp buggies, Kennedy Space Center tour buses, and non-alcoholic low-level late-night revelry.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAW!!!!!!
At 6pm, the sun had been down for about 20 minutes, and the temperature had already dropped to 6 degrees...at 7pm, it was 5 degrees, with a -8 wind chill...c'mon Wednesday...

When ya meet Randi, be sure to tell him Skinny says hello. :)

Hey, Charlie! A nice little RandR in Florida is what the ticker needs.
By not drinking you can observe your fellow skeptics and see if after one too many Daquiris you can convince them that the star they see in the sky really is a UFO, and you are their representative and would like to sell them real estate on Venus!
It might work....

Anyway, great news about the DR report!

Long-range forecast has rain on Friday, followed by cloudy days Sat and Sun. Let's hope it's wrong, so we can have good seeing Friday night! I plan to be at the rooftop star party Friday night -- I just hope there's a rooftop *and* some stars! :D

John

hal bidlack
27th January 2003, 01:49 PM
the rooftop viewing will actually be from the large empty lot next to the hotel. As it turns out, there is no parking structure. However, I have it on good authority that the starlight can in fact continue all the way down to the Earth's actual surface, if we put in a request early enough. That form was filed today, so if the clouds hold off, we are golden.

From the (so far) official schedule:

3:45 Panel discussion, all speakers

5:30-7:00 dinner break

7:00 General Alexander Hamilton, via Hal Bidlack

I'm thinking logistics here....200 people wanting to eat dinner...within 90 minutes?

Ain't gonna happen.

I predict that the schedule will slide. The panel discussion? Ah, fuhgeddaboutit! What do we want most, to hear the golden words of the esteemed panel, or to gobble fast-food at a breath-taking speed, whilst organizing transportation, taxis, cars, parking, etc.?

200 people flodding out into the streets, looking for taxis? The restaurants, not ready for that influx? People scrambling for food, all over town? People, arriving late??

Ain't gonna happen.

Personally, I'd starve to hear Shermer, Randi, Plait et al. I sure ain't gonna miss the panel discussion for some lousy American food. I can get that every day in NYC! :)

What say we simply order 200x3 sandwiches + 200 ice-cold beers/sodas, beat $20 out of each participant and focus on the seminar?? (The surplus could go to JREF...)

I value haut-cuisine more than most (I have stories to tell!!), but hey...we're there for the people, not the food, right?? :)

I shoulda gone looking first before posting what I erased...h*ll, I shoulda tried the links to make sure they worked...

Maps, directions, and reverse directions are available here. (http://www.mapquest.com/directions/)

To pick the airport, select Places Of Interest>Airports>Ft Lauderdale FL>the place with the address of 200 Terminal Drive (it's the way the silly thing works)...

TAM HQ -- 1230 S. Pine Island Rd, Plantation FL 33323

JREF HQ -- 201 S.E. 12 St. (E. Davie Blvd), Ft Lauderdale FL 33316

Plug these various whatnots in where they belong, and you'll not get lost...I hope...

YOU ! YOU THERE!

Print two copies of SkepticScott's directions, even if you intend to get a ride with someone. And print the maps too! And don't forget the phone numbers!

If you're expecting someone else in the airport, it might be fine if you printed a JREF HERE paper in Arial 72 and keep it with you. Just in case.
