By MICHAEL R. GORDON
KUWAIT CITY, March 1 — Iraq has placed surface-to-surface missiles within range of Kuwait in recent weeks, prompting a series of American airstrikes and opening a new phase in the low-grade air war between Iraq and the United States, according to American officials.

Because something is common and on-going for the past 10 years, you think that being the first to post about it means the rest haven't followed?

what do you call the action going on Iraq now?
Kylie Russell knows her husband Andrew is dead, but life with an SAS soldier was so often lonely and anxiety-ridden that it hasn't yet sunk in deeply that he is never coming home.
The SAS sergeant, killed on February 16 last year when his patrol vehicle hit a landmine in Afghanistan, was home less than half the year when he was alive. His work as a parachute specialist in the elite special forces sent him on brutal training exercises, as well as to action in Kuwait and East Timor and on missions that nobody will speak about.
The SAS, or Special Air Service Regiment, argues that it is its highly trained units that are the first to be called when Australia contributes to international military engagements, from Somalia and Rwanda, through to the Gulf War, East Timor and Afghanistan. Most analysts believe members of the Perth-based SAS are probably already undertaking their specialist reconnaissance and surveillance work deep inside Iraq.

The war never actually ended. As I understood it it was a cease fire based on Saddam doing all those things he has thus far failed to do. (ok started to do....sort of......slightly)

And look on the link page there. The $15k pension this lady is going to get, and what do we have on an advert slap bang in the middle of the article? "Marketing manager $120k".
Those sales meetings can be pretty tricky I guess.

When you read the list of bombings that are ongoing and continuous,do you ever wonder why Saddam keeps testing the US and UK no fly zones?
Each time he does, he gets hurt more than he hurts, like a child who keeps sticking his hand in a fire. Man's a wierdy.
It is an interesting link.

...was about to say something, but that's exactly right. It doesn't hurt HIM any, which is the problem with such "retribution and deterrance" - what the hell good does it do if you aren't exacting retribution or deterring the guy you actually wanted to?

John Howard is a total ratbag. He loves getting his picture taken with the troops going off. As this women says, once they are dead, they don't want to know you. Probably based on past experience of wars when millions have died. You can't waste too many tears on too many dead men and women.

...this is direct evidence of the "ongoing US agression against Iraq!!!"
US hands off of Iraq! No blood for Oil! Bush = Hitler!
Oh wait, you mean only military targets are being attacked in response to Iraqi prevarications in violation of UN Resolutions??
Damn - gotta read more Chomsky to learn how I should respond to this.

The skirmishes betwwen Iraqi and coalition forces have been going on nonstop for a decade...
For instance, yesterday an Iraqi MiG crossed over into Saudi Arabian airspace, but quickly jumped back over when the Iraqi pilot's aircraft was "painted" by American fighter-intercepters.
I can guarantee, however, that coalition special forces are currently in Iraq pinpointing possible targets and gathering intelligence.
Fortunately, the Pentagon and the Administration have ignored the caterwauling of "we have a right to know!..." from the press and certain segments of the public.

I'd love for you to argue your right to know the coalition's mission planning and implementation.

Cause I'm an inquiring mind.
No, it wasn't clear from your post that you were referring to such sensitive detail. I thought we were just talking about the fact that bombing is occurring. At least that was the point of the thread.
There's lots of stuff I don't want to know. I'm on a "need to know" policy.

You crack me up. Just because you don't read the papers and see the articles, you think there is a government conspiracy to keep you in the dark.
All of these little skirmishes have been reported. They had become so commonplace, that they barely merited a paragraph in the paper any more. Until now.

If you read the article, the widow metions missions that are low key, and ones that are well know, but also missions that no one wants you to know about.

The Family of dead soldiers are always a sad sight. In previous wars all the widows got was a thank you letter. $15,000 australian a year would not support a pet rabbit never mind a widow and children, I agree it sucks. Most people don't think of what they are worth dead. I would have no clue what my payout would have been If I had died during my time in the Army....Its never going to happen to you, so why worry.
As to the "slow buildup" of attacks. My opinion is that this is the way the US will run this war. There will be no definative "start date" It will be slowly ramped up until on day we will all realise it is going on full bore but you won't be able to point to a start date.
No doubt there are troops inside iraq now..... Recce elements of various line units will start ignoring the Iraqi border as the days go on, there probably won't be a "D Day".
This war will be nothing like the last one, Saddam should have learned that if he sits out in the open he will be smacked again. I think you will see all iraqi troops well hidden amongst the civilian population. Personally I would sit there, outside the cities, until they came out to ask for food... Maybe a swap scheme, one Big mac for one AK47? Things will start to fall apart, possible civil war and some Iraqi you have never heard of will put a bullet in Saddam and take over.

Likewise, all reports claim there will be no heavy units in northern Iraq because of Turkey.
Therefore, Saddam should count on heavy units attacking from the north. Precisely because war is 90% deception.
No armor = armor.
Understand Saddam? You will.

A little comic relief from the Onion.com:
Iraqi Homeowner To Wait A While
Before Re-Shingling Roof
BAGHDAD—Homeowner Aftab Shamoun, 34, announced Monday that he will likely wait "just a little while" before moving ahead with plans to re-shingle the roof of his Baghdad home. "Now may not be the best time to put on those nice new ceramic shingles," said Shamoun, whose roof was damaged in a wind storm last November. "Heck, I've been putting it off for so long, a few more months won't hurt." Despite putting the shingling project on the back burner, Shamoun said he plans to spend next weekend insulating his front windows with energy-efficient plywood boards.
