View Full Version : Is my collected Artform filth?

I am a 32 (soon to be 33 year old) year old male. I have fallen in love with Calendar Girl Pin-up art. The good stuff from Vargas, Elvgren, Olivia, etc.
I love the lines and curves of the women and the fact that they look like women. The girl next door... in thiegh highs mind you, but the girl next door. The colors, the alluring looks. I can't get enough of these.
My long winded questions is: Is what I consider to be a beautiful art, simply smut from an earlier era or is it still art? Am I just a "Playboy" collector of an earlier time? ...or is there something to the appreciation of the pure beauty of real women? Because damn it, I love women!:D

Truly art, though smut. I envy your collection.

For comparison purposes, here is some smut from a really earlier era:

The late paleontology professor Björn Kurtén included in one of his popular science books (can't remember which one) a rather interesting comparison of some 10000 year old cave paintings and 70s nudie pictures. The paintings showed naked women in different poses, and he managed to find every single one of those poses from modern erotic magazines.

Bet it took him AGES doing the research too...!

You can't expect us to make these kind of judgements without many, many examples of the artwork in question.

David

PS Many many.

Well...I am a single woman and I have three "Pin up girl" prints framed in my bathroom. The women are bathing or recently out of the bath. I think they are beautiful and sensual. I expect my male guests don't mind looking at them.

They fit with the overall scheme of my home which is 1930s-50s

No, I will not scan them.

It's art, no question about it. Have you thought about turning them into computer wallpaper? And then sending them to your friends? Right away?

O.K., O.K., I get the drift. I will officially bring a portion of them to TAM 3. ...and I do promise, the majority of them are very, very, very good. :D :D :D

BTox, I don't know what I did/said to offend you, but I am extremely disappointed in your rudeness. I joined the Forum to enjoy typed conversation with the other members. So far, I have enjoyed my communication and observances on the Forum. BUT, for you to use your choice of words in such an offensive manner, that you are one sad individual. You don't know me and let it be known to the rest of the Forum that I took offense to your comment. If you choose to be this infantile in your posts, at least have the decency of not alienating a group of potential members by not using words in a derrogatory form.

I think you missed seeing the smiley, KB.

I ADORE pinups. I'm crazy for them. I can go on and on about the beauty of them. But, I'll just leave it and say, oh, yeah, pinups rock.

It does not, however, break any forum rules. I would recomend use of the forum's Ignore function to avoid any rudeness found in this or other posts.

As always, this decision may be appealed to Hal Bidlack (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/private.php?s=&action=newmessage&userid=1753)[/i]</font></td></tr></table>

Whoa! Dude, chill out. Sarcasm. Ever hear of it? BTox is a mature and sensible person. He was just making a sarcastic response to your breathlessly enthusiastic praise of the female form. If your post had been about hamburgers written out the same way and he said, "You're a vegetarian, aren't you?" you might have picked up on the sarcasm. Might have. So turn down the sensitivity a notch or two, lest someone look at your tirade here and say, "Kevin doth protest too much, methinks." People like to jostle one another about around here. I hope no one ever really does get rude with you. You might not survive it. So, welcome to the forum. I mean that. Have fun.

Yes, I do understand sarcasm... usually sarcasm is predicated by knowing the individual you are pointing it towards. You say, "...You might not survive it." I am an Olympian (1988) and a United States Marine. I am built for survival, I just don't appreciate the rudeness of BTox's comment: "hmm, I'd say you are gay." Being that I don't know him, I didn't appreciate his so called sarcasm. Thank you for the welcome... it is appreciated.

Lighten up, Francis. If you didn't see the obvious humor in that remark, well, I'm not surprised based on some other of your posts.

PS You better grow some thicker skin to hang around here, and fast!

I don't need thicker skin... I need lower skin, because you are underneath it. You are an ass BTox.

hey, it's art. Remember, people thought Maxfield Parrish just did calendar art. The true test of art is time. As time has gone on, an appreciation has grown for the pin ups. The interesting thing is that there is some awful pin up art out there, that has happily died an early death.
