Dean was the first of the candidates to dare to challenge Bush on the Iraq war. This played quite well with those who totally detest Bush. Combined with a well-organized internet fund-raising campaign, Dean was in the catbird seat quite early with more money and more recognition than other candidates. That he was able to blow such an impressive lead doesn't speak well for his campaigning skills.
