I couldn't find any discussion of Greg Egan on these boards, which I found surprising. Would anyone like to critique his work, either this story or others of his that you've read? I'm curious as to his reception here at the JREF boards...

I read Schild's Ladder and thought it was pretty good, but toward the end I started skimming the heavy maths and quantum mechanics. His short story Luminous (from the collection of the same name) had a similar theme but was a better story.
Two other short stories stood out in that collection for me - Cocoon, which dealt with the future reawakening of prejudice against homosexuality when science gives people a way to eradicate it, and Reasons to be Cheerful, in which a man loses his ability to feel happy, then later has it artificially restored.

Haven't read Oceanic, but I really liked Quarantine. Very cool hard SF buried in a Noir story.
