I live in Calgary (Canada) and there's an upcoming municipal election. I got a flyer in my mailbox so I checked out a candidate's website. Her name is Helen Mowat and her site is her name with .com at the end. (I can't post links yet).

She has listed in her credentials a "Ph.D in Me." I wasn't sure what "Me" stood for, so I Googled it. That's when I came to the horrifying truth that she claims to have a degree in herself.

I originally contacted her just to hear her opinion on things, but it went south really fast. Among her beliefs:

9/11 was an inside job (she won't tell me who was responsible, only that she knows the truth).

JFK wasn't killed by Oswald. Princess Diana was assassinated.

The Pope, the Queen of England and George Bush Sr. and Jr. have been replaced by lizard shapeshifters (she got this one from some guy named David Icke.)

I need to listen to some show by some guy called Alex Jones to learn the truth about what's going on in the world.

Here's a quote from her latest (hopefully final) email:

***
Sorry Dear, I use my whole mind, body and soul and go beyond so you think your way and I can think my way. Developing one's conscience does increase the level of one's consciousness.

Sorry, but you are wrong. We still live in a free country, I hope so! I will not be taking any more time with you. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. You drink the kool-aid the main stream media has indoctrinated you with using a fraction of your mind. Why do they the elite (Rothschild's, Rockefellers, Henri Kissinger, Bronfman's, Reichmann) etc., they want to get rid of the internet and shows like Infowars and others???

You watch you shows that have subliminal messages about the environment where they just want to taxed and control you and it is only about greed and power. Just a thought!

You enjoy being a slave. You probably believe in over populations also and the one child policy?? Bye!

As Einstein said, "You can't change something with the same mind that created it!" Tallyho!
Helen.
***

I can only pray to Jebus that she isn't elected.

Sigh.

Send this letter to the local paper. That's the Herald, isn't it?

Actually, you can do quite a bit more than that.

Yeah, it's the Herald. There's also the Calgary Sun. I'm not sure what tone to take if I were to send it to them. Any suggestions?

Well, depends on how you want to play it. If you can talk to an editor directly, you might suggest that he could have fun with a poke-fun-at-the-nutcase expose, in which case you can be as harsh as you like.

If you just send in a "letter to the editor," I would suggest going with a 'view with concern/think of the children/what does this say about our educational standards' approach.

You could just sort of send them the letter, even though local papers aren't big on controversy, you might get something in there. A letter to the editor could work too, as drkitten said.

Sounds pretty crazy. I mean, I know about the shape-shifting lizards, and that's standard fare for school trustees, but really, JFK?

I'd go to the CBC. She'd be a great guest on The Current, As It Happens, or The Sunday Edition.

Somebody that crazy needs national exposure.

There may be a few people over in the Conspiracy Theories forum who have experience in dealing with this sort of lunatic in the real world, and can suggest some good strategies. She certainly seems to have swallowed all the major ones whole.

I'm really, really glad we don't have Alex Jones over here.

Nutcases stand for election all the time. Is there any chance that this person will actually be elected?

I mean, is she presenting herself as a mainstream candidate with mainstream policies and you just happen to have accidentally uncovered her wacky beliefs, or is she openly proclaiming her belief in Teh Lizard Overlords?

<edit> Actually, having googled http://www.helenmowat.com/ I see the smoking gun is in the "Resources" tab of her election website: a long list of URLs and, for example, top of the list is prisonplanet.
Just point that out to her opponents (if they haven't seen it already) or any local journalist.

Well, she sure doesn't make it easy by not providing hyperlinks to all of her references.

I'm sure the Canadian Health Officials would love this one:

http://www.drlenhorowitz.com/

Dr. Horowitz is recognized as "a hero" internationally and invited frequently - from North America to Africa , and from England to China - as one of the most articulate and well-researched critics of "iatrogenocide" (i.e., physician assisted mass murder); including risky "immunization" practices--what he irreverently refers to as "the sacred cow of public health."

I don't know that she stands a chance of getting elected. If she gives a speech or takes part in a debate, I'd like to go to heckle her.

How is it that people like this still exist?

Nutter is a good word for it. I've just recently discovered this reptile nonsense and this is the first time a conspiracy theory literally made me laugh. I never laughed at 9/11 truther or fake moon landing theories though I didn't believe them but Icke's reptilian theories gave me an outright belly laugh when hearing them for the first time.

Queen Elizabeth is supposed to be a reptile, because the name "Elizabeth" sounds like "A Lizard Birth" This is the type of reasoning behind it.

Perhaps Icke got the idea from watching that series called 'V' that was on TV many years ago; the reptilian aliens took on human form but couldn't disguise their tongues. Mrs Windsor might have had a tongue transplant, of course.

However, it's her 'resources' page that is the real shocker.

Well..if they really are shape shifters, you should be able to determine that from their eating habits..in 'V' the TV series they ate mice...anyone see George Bush eat mice????or is that classified information???

Helen Mowat is a dynamic teacher, a visionary thinker and an integrative researcher. She loves connecting the dots, common sense, and seeing the BIG PICTURE.

and

However, my informal credential of a Ph.D. in Me specializing in Self-Awareness (1997) and my life experiences far superseded my formal degrees and diploma because it gave me the tools to understand Common Sense.

I think that is proven to be a lie by the emails showing she has no common sense whatever!

You'll all be happy to hear that Helen did not win the election, so the CBE is safe for another three years. Wards 11 & 13 went to KAREN KRYCZKA. Helen's name does not appear in any of the other CBE Wards (http://www.cbe.ab.ca/trustees/trustees.asp). I think I'll shoot her a quick e-mail and express my relief at this outcome.

Did you actually send it? Given her conspiratorial beliefs, if she gets an e-mail before the election telling her she's already lost, it could have... interesting consequences ;).

You know what makes this even more interesting.? Twisted perhaps? Is that I did send her an e-mail, and she responded (with some rambling about water fluoridation, to which I responded to), but she signed School Board Trustee (not candidate). As far as I'm concerned, she's currently not Trustee of any CBE Ward ... so either she's pompous enough to have this as her signature pre-election, or I actually got into her head with my conspiracy of knowing!

(she didn't even mention the fact that I could be wrong ... which was quite strange to me as well ... one twisted, crazy, complicated cookie Helen is)

What a riot.

Have you considered the possibility that she's previously appointed herself a Trustee of the School of Me Board? Maybe she'd need to do so in order to authorise herself to confer a Ph.D in Me upon herself.

Unless Canadian voters are a whole lot more interested in local politics than US voters are, this lady could get elected fairly easily if she's got the right political party listed next to her name. What fraction of people really follow politics at this level, but still vote just because they can while they're at the poll for national politics? I will freely admit that I've voted for coroner before without checking on the political stances of the candidates involved.
