I listened to that yesterday. It's pretty good.
The link didn't seem to work too well, but maybe this will:
How Fake Money Saved Brazil (http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2010/10/04/130329523/how-fake-money-saved-brazil) (All Things Considered, [7 min 50 sec])
ETA: Actually, this is what I listened to:
The Friday Podcast: How Four Drinking Buddies Saved Brazil (http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2010/10/01/130267274/the-friday-podcast-how-four-drinking-buddies-saved-brazil) (Planet Money, [29 min 56 sec])

Man, they were sneaky. They invented fake money and called it 'The Real'.

That story is an oversimplification and a misrepresentation.
Firstly, the currency was as fake as IMF's SDRs or EU's ECUs before it became the Euro.
Second, the currency replacement was possible and successful once the government could do without the inflation tax. That was the most important part of the plan.
Third, the replacement was modeled on successful Convertibility plan implemented in Argentina two years in advance, but building on it by correcting a couple of defects with long term consequences.
There are forth, fifth, etc. but I want to watch live the rescue of the trapped miners ....:runaway
