“I heard that you lit the stage up with Les Paul a few months ago…

Manson was playing in New Jersey and I heard word that Les Paul was playing in New York City. So, I went down to the club as soon as I got off stage. I even changed in the car. I got there and met Les Paul, and he asked if I wanted to get up and play. He didn’t know who I was, but he heard that I was in some semi-successful band.

They were playing standards that they all knew. I was really nervous because I didn’t know any of their songs. I had my American Vintage ’52 Telecaster and he said “Oh, you have one of THOSE (laughs).” My ’52 is nicknamed “Lucille” because it’s ALWAYS with me. I love it and won’t go anywhere without it.

So, I started playing and using all my tricks. The crowd started clapping during the song and Les was shaking his head. I stopped and started walking off the stage, when he asked me to come back on stage. He said, “I’ve played with Beck, Page and Clapton. But, you impress me son!" He asked me back to play his Christmas show. It really was one of the greatest days of my life! I was on cloud nine for a long time!!!”

I believe Les Paul plays the Iridium club every Tues. or Wed night here in NYC. I really should go one night, esp. since he's very old and who knows how long he'll be around. He has bad arthritis and has to hold the guitar awkwarly just to be able to play.

Getting a compliment like that from Mr. Paul is quite the compliment. Though I've yet to be impressed with an entire Marilyn Manson album, but there are some excellent tracks.

There was a great story about Paul in an old Guitar Player issue, where they interviewed Chet Atkins right after the "Chester and Lester" album.

Chet's quite the perfectionist, and he and Les sat down to run through some of the songs they planned for the album. The tape was running. They'd played a dozen numbers or so, and Les started to put his guitar away. "That's good, send it to the pressers."
"But", says Chet, who thought they were just rehearsing, "what about all the clams?"
"Oh, leave em' in. Folks will think we're human."

Reminds me of something Stephen Stills said about working with Neil Young: "I teach him a little bit about polish, and he teaches me a little about being real."

On topic...wouldn't I just love to play with Les Paul once!!!!!

You may know this, but it's mainly because he shattered his elbow many years ago and had it set in that position so he could continue to play guitar.

Telecaster. Why did they change the headstock, I wonder?
