View Full Version : POM - Seelie

An unofficial chapter in a very intermittent series of "Philosopher of the Month" threads
Now, Seelie would have explained it like this:
The idea is to create a thread in which a philosopher is introduced, we learn a bit about their history, and then we take a snippet of their writings/ideas and discuss. Good old-timey sit down discussion of a concept from all sides. There is no "right" or "wrong" to it, nor is there any argument to "win".
First a bit of history,
(we generally pick someone you've never heard of, so don't feel ashamed if you don't recognise this name)
Seelie became addicted to coffee at an early age, or a little later.
She may or may not be Greek.
She's a she. Probably.
I do know that she looks after souls, works with computers and lives in a snifty place.
Now for the snippet:
I don't suffer from insanity ... I learn from it.
Which of course explains why she came to the JREF R&P forums to learn.
Have we become too sane?
Have we nothing left to teach?
I sincerely hope not! :D

I find reading Seelie is always an interesting experience. Her words are thoughtful and, for me, hold more than a grain of truth.
It's interesting that others make assumptions about her lack of beliefs but nowhere does she state herself to be an atheist. Neither does she appear to deny it though :p
And this unwillingness to categorise herself is one of the things that impresses me about this particular PoM :D
That and her cool, calm attitude :)

It's interesting that others make assumptions about her lack of beliefs but nowhere does she state herself to be an atheist.
This is not so surprising for our first living POM. It symbolises the dichotomy of our times. To borrow a little from Franko's optimism/pessimism idea:
"Is the coffee mug half full or half empty?"
Seelie will always apply her wisdom to such matters by not choosing sides, but instead replying with the answer: "Must.. Drink.. Coffee.. Now!!" Which has a direct extension to the theism/atheism debate with the corresponding answer "Live your life now."
(It seems that we're not insane enough to entice her back)

Geh ... Interesting what one misses when one doesn't read the boards every day ... also interesting what one finds when one performs a post search on the Forum for one's name ... a pseudo - appreciation thread devoted to me (cringe) I'm not sure which is worse ... the fact I had one, or the fact that only two people posted on it... Heh!! :p
I'm not dead :p
And, while I dislike categorizations, the use of descriptors is moderately acceptable ... as long as one doesn't necessarily subscribe to all the popular / societal connotations / prejudices of said descriptor ... That being said, I'll nudge out this little bit o' information if anyone out there has ever been curious or cared (doubtful, but ya never know ;) ) ...
If any descriptor would be applied to me, it would ~not~ be the descriptor of atheist. And that's all I'll say on that ... *snark* ;) :p :D

Hey, where did you get "PSEUDO-appreciation thread" from? This is a serious examination of serious philisophical thoughts!
for those that REALLY care about theistic apathy:
Originally posted by Evildave, in the thread where Lucifuge became an ordained minister
This site allegedly produces a PDF document which you can print out for your degree. [Evildave] chose to be a minister, and get a 'Master of Nescience' degree. It seemed fitting.
I thought it was quite ironic.

all we know about Seelie's religious views is what she is not. Therefore we should restrict ourselves to calling her an a-atheist.
