Last week, President Bush offered a wry critique of his Democratic challengers. "They're for tax cuts and against them. They're for NAFTA and against NAFTA. They're for the Patriot Act and against the Patriot Act. They're in favor of liberating Iraq, and opposed to it. And that's just one senator from Massachusetts." Now that John Kerry is the presumptive Democratic nominee, Republicans are sure to focus the spotlight on his history of flip-flops. Kerry did vote for the Patriot Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, and the war in Iraq, even though he constantly trashes the Patriot Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, and the war in Iraq. He voted against the Defense of Marriage Act, which limited marriage to a man and a woman, but he now says marriage should be limited to a man and a woman. (Although he also points out that he once attended a gay wedding.) And those are just the better-known issues on which Kerry has "evolved."

It doesn't look like Kerry has any more integrity than Bush.

Honestly? I could easily see how a lawmaker might be against a particular bill but still vote for it with the thought that it was better than nothing. In the same fashion, a pol could be for something as a general interest, yet vote nay if he/she thought a pending piece of legislation was flawed.

Without such details to consider we're left with the simplistic, "he's for this yet against this so he's obviously a malleable little undecided waffler" inanity. Of course, such a script plays well with the folks, so expect to see it recited ad nauseum.

Bush seems to like flip flopping himself. Last year, he blamed CNN for the faultering economy:

"As you may remember, we had the steady drumbeat to war," Bush said in response to a reporter's question about the jobless economic recovery despite three Bush administration tax cuts and 12 interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.

"On some TV screens there was a constant reminder for the American people — ‘March to War.' War is not a very pleasant subject in people's minds (and) it's not conducive for the investment of capital."

Bush told a news conference Wednesday that "the drumbeat to war" had slowed economic recovery due in part to an unnamed television network's use of the banner "March to War."

"That's not a very conducive environment for people to take risk, when they hear, ‘March to War' all the time," Bush said.

But this year, Bush took credit for damaging the economy:

Bush: "The attacks on our country affected our economy. Corporate scandals affected the confidence of people and therefore affected the economy. My decision on Iraq, this kind of march to war, affected the economy , but we have been through a lot. And what those numbers show is the fact we have been through a lot."

So who's really at fault? CNN or Bush? Maybe it's Clinton...he seems to get blamed for everything from the economy to 9/11.

You appear to be forgetting the twists and turns of Bush on the primary trail. They all do it. They do what they think they have to do to get elected. Then they try to take what little dignity they have left and policies and do what they wanted to do in the first place.

If you want to follow Bush's own flip-flops as president, try his attitude to China for a start. They were gearing up for WWIII with China when they came to office.

Or his plans for Iraq, post 'Major Phase' of the war.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but to think that only one side or the other does it is pretty naive.

The other fact, of course, is that sometimes you have to change your mind. Plenty of projects are started, only to be changed half way through because something is just not going to work.
