Hi -

Looking for some insight in regard to a textbook option for biology - high school sophomores (16 years old). My current text is, well, terrible and old.
I would like to purchase Miller/Levine -

However, our HS is looking at going to 1 on 1 laptops for our students (grades 6-8 have already done this.) Long story short - there is a push toward "on line textbooks/ on line learning." Essentially, no textbooks will be purchased until technology-based options are explored thoroughly. To be honest, I think an actual text book is important. However, I am a "book person."

My questions -

*Does anyone one have recommendations in regard to online options for biology texts that are good?

*Any information in regard to the practicality, success, pros/cons of "on line learning" for Biology? Studies? Does it work? Is a "book" necessary for biology?

*Can an online biology text actually work - my opinion is that using a text is not like reading a novel on a Kindle. Personally, I would hate it - but, is it better/ok for my students?

I have my preference - having an actual text book. However, I am open to exploring this option and would like to find some concrete information, experiences or recommendations (pro or con) that I can look into further.

Thanks for any input.
Kevin

A lot of books will come with a CD or an access code to view their book and resources online. I am in college and for my Intro to Biology class we use Biology: Understanding Life by Alters & Alters.

Try BBC bitesize - just bang that reference into Google.

Very good for a wide range of subjects and widely used in British schools.

My preference, though, is for a real book!
