Now this is just bizarre.

Hicks, Habib may be jailed in Australia (http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,8912762%255E1702,00.html)

While I have a great many reservations about the legality of the justice process to which Hicks and Habib are being subjected, I can't for the life of me understand the Senate's reasoning in passing this law.

If - indeed - Hicks and Habib have committed a crime and are found guilty, then why should the option of serving their time in their own country be available to them when it is not available to Australians who are tried by other legitimate courts abroad?

Or is the Senate planning on passing a law next week which allows Aussies found guilty of drug trafficking in Indonesia to serve their time on home soil, too?

Political pressure and expediency, pure and simple. With an election in the offing and his political stocks plummeting, Little Johnny blows in the breeze - he's as weak as water, really.

Possibly they are just interested in getting them out of the hands of thier kidnappers. Once back in australia they will be back under a juristiction that has a rule of law....They can, hopefully, then be treated justly.
